perfect family road trip book

our family of 6, 4 kids between the ages of 5 and 10, all loved this book. captivating story and informative- we all learned a lot about the Dewey decimal system. make sure you've read, or listened to, the first book in series before this one.

Not as good as the first...

First, what happened to the voice of Mr. Lemoncello?? In this sequel, the narrator/reader chose to do away with his (stereotyped) Italian accent, and instead Mr. Lemoncello sounds more like Barney. We had to abandon listening halfway through chapter 5, as soon as Mr. Limoncello makes his appearance.

We have warm memories of the characters from this first book, having enjoyed it both as an audiobook and book. But in this book, the plot devices were telegraphed from the beginning, the characters cliched (especially the Chiltontons), leaving nothing compelling to advance the story.

Narrator Changed Voices from book 1 to this

How could the performance have been better?

I was disappointed that the narrator changed the voice of Mr. Lemoncello significantly, to where in the first book he sounded like an eccentric, this book he sounded much more foolish and bumbling. I never got used to the new voice, unfortunately, throughout the performance.

Willy Wonka meet reality TV in a library adventure

In the tradition of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory and perhaps current trends in reality television this book is an adventure for the whole family. My kids understand the Dewey decimal system now. That’s because of this book. They also were reminded of how fun games of all sorts can be—even word games. We’re big fans of Grabenstein. The narration by Bernstein was on point.

My kids love these stories

My kids loved the first and this story, though they didn't like how the voices for some of the characters changed from the first story to this one. other than that they were hooked from beginning to end.
