About this listen

'The rock memoir of the decade' Daily Mail

In his first and only official autobiography, music icon Elton John reveals the truth about his extraordinary life, which is also the subject of the smash-hit film Rocketman. The result is Me - the joyously funny, honest and moving story of the most enduringly successful singer/songwriter of all time.
______________

Read by actor and star of Rocketman, Taron Egerton, with an introduction, new chapter and epilogue read by Elton John.

Christened Reginald Dwight, he was a shy boy with Buddy Holly glasses who grew up in the London suburb of Pinner and dreamed of becoming a pop star. By the age of twenty-three, he was performing his first gig in America, facing an astonished audience in his bright yellow dungarees, a star-spangled T-shirt and boots with wings. Elton John had arrived and the music world would never be the same again.

His life has been full of drama, from the early rejection of his work with songwriting partner Bernie Taupin to spinning out of control as a chart-topping superstar; from half-heartedly trying to drown himself in his LA swimming pool to disco-dancing with the Queen; from friendships with John Lennon, Freddie Mercury and George Michael to setting up his AIDS Foundation. All the while, Elton was hiding a drug addiction that would grip him for over a decade.

In Me Elton also writes powerfully about getting clean and changing his life, about finding love with David Furnish and becoming a father. In a voice that is warm, humble and open, this is Elton on his music and his relationships, his passions and his mistakes. This is a story that will stay with you, by a living legend.

Blazingly honest . . . From sex and drugs and dancing with the Queen to sobriety and finally fatherhood, the rock star's gloriously entertaining and candid memoir is a gift to the reader
The rock memoir of the decade
Self-deprecating, funny . . . You cannot help but enjoy his company throughout, temper tantrums and all
All the sex, drugs and showbiz gossip you could want . . . A chatty, gossipy, amusing and at times brutally candid account
Outrageously enjoyable . . . racy, pacy and crammed with scurrilous anecdotes – what more could you ask from the rocket man?
Bracingly open and spectacularly funny . . . practically everyone who is anyone in rock jumps briefly but revealingly into view
Full of warmth and candour . . . John's enthusiasm for music continues to shine through, as does the rebellious streak that made him the groundbreaking artist he continues to be today
A fitting testament to Elton’s life . . . unrelentingly enjoyable
Me is a riveting, laugh-til-you-cry, heartfelt page-turner . . . it is the earnest, sweet, damaged “music mad” kid at the heart of Me that will stick with you.
The perfect pop memoir . . . the world's most successful singer-songwriter is thin-skinned, opinionated, mischievous a, prone to excess - and funny

I loved this book! I've always thought of Elton John as one of the greatest musical talents ever, and of Bernie Taupin as one of the greatest lyricists, and I've adored their collaborations over the decades. To see the background to that relationship and the desperate hardship of Elton's childhood, his father's intransigence and inability to love, his mother's selfishness and his love for them in spite of it brought me to tears. I saw Rocketman first, but then I had to have Me as soon as possible. It's well written, and well read. A real page turner. Go, buy, read, download, listen. You won't regret it.

Moving, funny, and like the subject, fabulous.

I knew this book would be a rollercoaster of emotions. However I did not know how much. It is just sublimely, outrageously amazing, the truth, heart and honesty is touching in a way that words can't give justice to. I loved Elton before now I feel a connection that is more than fan to star, some of his experiences mirror my own. Knowing this has changed me and my outlook, Sir Elton I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this book xx

Heart wrenchingly wonderful

This audio book starts and ends with Elton giving an overview of his colourful life. The story is read, however, by Taron Egerton, the actor who plays Elton in the Rocketman film. It takes a bit of getting used to and I would have preferred to have heard Elton read the story himself.

Even through the filter of Elton's giant rose tinted spectacles this is a compelling story of the boy called Reg from Pinnar who made it from bashing out sing-a-long pub songs to being one of most successful recording artists in the world. Through the years as a session musician in the 60s and getting his first break as a member of Bluesology and becoming a member of Long John Baldry's backing band but becoming disillusioned and leaving due (ironically) to having to play "syrupy housewives' choice ballads".

It is candid. It is all here. The sex, the drugs, the tantrums, the booze, the hair loss, the shopping, the Leather Jacket album, the bulimia, the family bust ups, the addictions - including being addicted at one point to attending addiction self help meetings. Most of this is well known as Elton John has continued to be front page news for nearly 50 years and his exploits have become legendary. He talks with disgust about the lies told about him by The Sun and the homophobia he has endured from the press through his career. There are a few surprising revelations too; apparently he was not as close to Diana as the public thought and was shocked to be asked to play at her funeral and confounded as to why so many people bought Candle In the Wind. He does speak frankly about his relations with other members of the royal family and seems to be genuinely close to them. It is the music that he will be remembered for though.

His recently diagnosed prostrate cancer has resulted in him re-examining his life and it seems that his next world tour really will be the last. But then again, we have heard that before, haven't we?

Candid confessions through giant rose tinted specs

Superb narration by Taron. I have been left with a much better understanding of Elton, and dare I say there are a lot of similarities between us

Thoroughly enjoyed this book
