Mark Aurel steht noch auf der Höhe Hadrians und hat Rom noch einmal vor den Germanen gerettet; gleich hinter ihm gähnt der Absturz Roms, und ein Chaos von Thronwirren und der wirtschaftlicher Niedergang beginnt. Aber Kaiser Marc Aurel war nicht nur Feldheer, sondern ist heute noch vor allem bekannt als Verfasser der philosophischen Schrift "Selbstbetrachtungen". Er gilt damit als der letzte große Vertreter der stoischen Lehre.
