About this listen
What happens when you stumble upon your childhood crush, only to discover that he's been turned into a vampire?
I feel like I spend my whole life putting out fires. That's probably just part of the territory with being a magpie-shifter from such a chaotic family. All I want is to keep my loved ones safe and have some fun. I've never been cut out to be the responsible one.
And Jordan Houjin is still everything I remember...hot, sexy arrogance and smoldering smart mouth. Except now he's angry at the world and disappears every time I run into him. But that's fine because I want nothing to do with a vampire my family would never accept anyway. Don't I?
Unfortunately, he's the only one I know who can help me keep this dragon egg alive.
Contains mature themes.
So after listening to book 3 on audio, I decided that I was going to go back and do this one as well as it was my second favourite of the series. And I'm so glad I did because it made me fall in love with the story and characters all over again.
One of the things I love about listening to audio especially one that I have previously read, is the way the narrator will give a different dimension to the characters I've built in my mind, and I especially loved Maeve York (Sydney) who encapsulated the character perfectly. The humour, sass and banter between the two leads is fantastic, but it's the breaking down of barriers and the developing romance that comes along with it, that really captured my heart.
While out scouting a warehouse in her magpie form, Sydney discovers some dragons eggs which have been illegally captured for sale. Knowing she has to save them, she calls in help to keep them alive,
which puts her face to face with her childhood crush Jordan. Only he's not the happy go lucky boy she remembers as he is now a vampire, mad at the world and more than a bit prickly towards her. But when the baby dragon entrusted to Sydney's care needs more help than she can give, will Jordan let down his walls enough to let Sydney in so they can work together to keep him safe.
Sydney is brash, outspoken, totally chaotic at times but hoo boy, is she fiercely loyal to those she loves. Yes, this magpie shifter does like to push boundaries but at the same time is respectful of others. The fact that she is comfortable in her own skin (as a human) and has no issues walking around naked after a shift, but heaven forbid if anyone sees her in molt (as a bird) is hilariously funny, making her character so very believable and relatable you can't help but love her. But it's her magpie nature that really had me adoring her, especially when it comes to her 'bird brain' who has a certain vampire in its sights and not even Jordan's barriers are going to come between them....
My heart literally went out to Jordan, because he's not deliberately being aloof, prickly or grumpy, he's actually traumatised. Having been turned into a vampire against his will, he is simply trying to come to terms with the hurt and anger he feels having to deal with his new reality. After being blamed by his family for what happened to him, he thinks that staying away from everyone he knew before is the best course of action. Unfortunately this includes Sydney as well. But watching him come around and not only start to trust Sydney but fall for her as well really made my heart dance with happiness. Yes, I really couldn't help but fall in love with him all over again.
Although this does touch on sensitive subjects, this is a heartwarming and cozy story. It's full of humour, with added spice and a romance that will steal your heart. Highly recommend 😁
