Summary

King Charles of France has announced that he is confiscating Aquitaine, and Prince Edward has sent for knights and men at arms from England to assist him in opposing the French king. Lord Gilbert Talbot is required to provide five knights, 12 squires, and 20 archers and men at arms, and wishes his surgeon - Hugh de Singleton - to travel with the party, while Hugh’s wife Kate oversees the castle.

Among the party will be Sir Simon Trillowe, Hugh’s old nemesis and Kate’s former suitor, who had once set fire to Hugh’s house. After a brawl on the streets of Oxford, Sir Simon had nearly lost an ear; Hugh had sewn it back on but it had healed crooked, and Simon blamed Hugh for the disfigurement.

Finding himself in the same party, Hugh resolves not to turn his back on the knight - but it is Sir Simon who should not have turned his back.

Another satisfying mediaeval mystery.

Tum Bruce does a good job of relating the tale of unsophisticated people who lived in more simple times.

Good short story meaningful

in War torn France! Hugh de Singleton finds he's draughted in this short but well written book. Interesting how Hughs services are vitally needed as no antibiotics in those days! Still tells us how good prevails against evil and how war is vain and cruel to all mankind. We, the English finally gave up fighting areas of France we thought we owned! This story is well told by Tim Bruce mRR

narrator.

Great series

I'm doing a review for the whole series as I've left it so long since I started listening to them.

I would highly recommend this series and in fact I have done so to a number of people already. Very impressed with the writing, the research that seems to have been done and the historical accuracy is excellent.

Nice characters, good pace, interesting stories. Really interesting to see the ability of surgeons then and the ways Hugh deducts things.

This is outstanding work

Reading is clear, no hokey voices or mumbling, reader is gender and culture appropriate. Historicity is solid and with adequate detail. The mystery is well worked out and nothing bizarre or unbelievable. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Not much happens

This is very short and the motive for the killing comes out of nowhere. I could have done without the homophobia at the end.

Very short

This isn’t a bad book but coming in at less than 5 hours it felt slight. I’ll be checking in future to see if new ones are better value.
