About this listen

The collection of 10 absorbing tales by master psychotherapist Irvin D. Yalom uncovers the mysteries, frustrations, pathos, and humor at the heart of the therapeutic encounter. In recounting his patients' dilemmas, Yalom not only gives us a rare and enthralling glimpse into their personal desires and motivations but also tells us his own story as he struggles to reconcile his all-too-human responses with his sensibility as a psychiatrist. Not since Freud has an author done so much to clarify what goes on between a psychotherapist and a patient.

The audio version of the book includes an exclusive interview with Dr. Yalom.

The book is wonderful, a Yalom classic. The reading/narration, as some other reviewers have noted, is a bit odd. For me it was too fast and unvaried in tone. After a few minutes, I’d realise I wasn’t listening anymore. The reading is too monotonous, lacking pauses for emphasis or a breath of air. Slowing down the speed on the Audible app made it more listenable.

Great Book, Odd Narration

AMAZING read

As a budding counsellor I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the stories of many through the senses of the psychotherapist. There was a distinct humanness about it which made it educational yet addictive. The performance was outstanding and made it an easy listen. This should be on the reading list for trainees everywhere.

Superbly insightful
