About this listen

In this engrossing, masterfully twisting new thriller from the #1 internationally bestselling author, a forensics trainee learns through a DNA test that she mysteriously disappeared as a baby thirty years ago—and her life is still in danger …

When Dr. Sloan Hastings submits her DNA to an online genealogy site for a research assignment, her goal is to better understand the treasure-trove of genetic information contained on ancestry websites. Brilliant and driven, Sloan is embarking on a fellowship in forensic pathology, training under the renowned Dr. Livia Cutty.

Sloan has one reservation about involving herself in the experiment: she’s adopted. Grateful for a loving home, she’s never considered tracking down her biological parents. The results of her search are shocking. Sloan’s DNA profile suggests her true identity is that of Charlotte Margolis, aka “Baby Charlotte,” who captured the nation’s attention when she mysteriously disappeared, along with her parents, in July 1995. Despite an exhaustive search, the family was never seen again, and no suspects were named in the case.

Sloan’s discovery leads her to the small town of Cedar Creek, Nevada, the site of her disappearance. It also leads her to Sheriff Eric Stamos. The Margolis family’s influence and power permeate every corner of Harrison County, and Eric is convinced that in learning the truth about her past, Sloan can also help discover what happened to Eric’s father, who died under suspicious circumstances soon after he started investigating her disappearance.

Slowly, over the course of a stifling summer, Sloan begins getting to know her relatives. Though initially welcoming, the Margolis family is also mysterious and tight-lipped. Not everyone seems happy about Sloan’s return, or the questions she’s asking. And the more she and Eric learn, the more apparent it becomes that the answers they both seek are buried in a graveyard of Margolis family secrets that some will do anything to keep hidden—no matter who else has to die …

Charlie Donlea books are always really addictive. I didn’t like the narrator at all. Like a news caster very formal and ridged and did not suit the character of the book. If you. Can get past the narrator it’s a great book and I’m glad I pushed on with it.

Great Story

Another brilliant story from Charlie Donlea. Performed really well as well. Would recommend to thriller fans!

I was about to give up on this book. The narration was grating on me and that meant I wasn’t managing to focus on the book. I’ll try again, because another reviewer, Andrew Grant, felt the same but was glad he stuck with it, because it’s apparently a good story. ……… OK, I’ve heard the rest of the story. I fell asleep near the end, and had to rewind it; yes, it was so exciting that I fell asleep. The narration is awful. I know poor narration can ruin a book, but in this case I don’t think it was just that. I wish I had kept notes of examples, because my brain is quite numb and empty after listening to this, so I can’t remember the errors in the writing. If you want to read this, either wait until it’s free or I would suggest you don’t waste any money on it, but get a copy from the library.

Thank you Andrew Grant

I love Charlie Donlea usually but this one was so slow.

Multiple detailed explanations of genealogy and other bits that made me lose interest very early on. I understand the need to explain some of the things discussed in the book in detail, but not as basically as it does here, and so often! You’d think a character that’s supposed to be medically trained would have some inkling of what forensic genealogy is, and what happened in the Golden State Killer case, but not in this book.

Also, if you’re familiar with the Murdaugh family case, this is all repeated a bit here.

Sadly way too slow for me and too familiar with the use of the widely discussed true crime cases as a basis for the story.

Definitely a Charlie Donlea fan but this one wasn’t worth a credit.

Not a fan of this one

While I have listened to several Donlea books and enjoyed them ( particularly " Those dead eyes") this story depends on film photography and developing processes. His descriptions are SO wrong that it undermines the suspension of disbelief needed to make a crime story work. And there are many other errors or inconsistencies - ground penetrating radar is NOT ultrasound; why (and how) would you bury bodies twelve feet underground? ;and how do you shoot someone with a hand gun and suddenly not know where they are?
I stuck with it because I find his crafting of stories from different timelines intriguing. But the errors spoiled it for me.

Poor research on photography and other errors...
