About this listen

Glasgow 1953: a hard city at a hard time. The war may be over but the battle for the streets is just beginning, and shady investigator Lennox is the man in the middle.

The McGahern twins were on the way up until Tam, the brains of the outfit, becomes the victim of a vicious contract killing. Tam's brother Frankie turns to Lennox to find out who killed his twin. Lennox refuses. Later that night, Frankie turns up dead, and Lennox finds himself in the frame for murder.

The only way of proving his innocence is to solve the crime - but he'll have to dodge men more deadly than Glasgow's crime bosses before he gets any answers.

As a native of Glasgow, its always a trip listening to a story based in my home town and when its told by the wonderful Sian Barrett, it really is a trip to remember. I could listen to the lovely Mr Barrett recite the Oxford dictionary from A to Z non stop. He has incredible reach when it comes to accents and makes characters come alive and take on another dimension. His Glasgow accents are practically faultless with only a couple of minor mispronunciations of place names, but to be fair pronouncing Milngavie properly is something even we need to be taught, its not Mil-in-gavie its pronounced..Milguy. made me smile.

So back to the book. I think its a pretty accurate time-capsule depiction of Glasgow in the 50s, according to stories I've heard from my parents. ok so there's some stereotyping and plenty misogynistic moments, but its done with tongue in cheek and Lennox not only can laugh at the Glasgow folk, but at himself and so makes the reader climb down fast from their high horse and not take the hump (Glasgow vernacular for taking offence).

Overall I enjoyed the story, the characters, the places and the gags peppered throughout. its brutal but also funny in places and puts me in mind of a Glasweigen Spencer Tracey, now that would be something to see.

I bought the whole series before I listened to the first book so I'm glad I liked it. I'm looking forward to seeing where the story is going to lead me as the series progresses x

Loved it!

I’m really looking forward to more from this author. A very good listen. The main character, Lennox, is like a Scottish (actually Canadian, which has far less relevance than the fact that his life is embedded in Glasgow. I think he counts as Scottish) Philip Marlow but with more swearing.

Excellent narration.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, to any one looking for a crime thriller series to get into this really is a must. I'm up to date with Jussi and Robotham, so needed another series to get into and was delighted to have found this---I'll listen to them all.

What did you like best about this story?

The atmosphere is really nicely crafted and the characters dovetail into it perfectly. It really does encapsulate the cold, hard bitten world in which Lennox inhabits and the woven in humour is dryer than a binge drinkers tongue on Boxing Day morning.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, laughed out loud several times and then remembered some of the one liners later, when not listening, and laughed again. Extremely dry humour, exactly how I like it.

Any additional comments?

Highly recommended to all crime thriller lovers looking for something meaty and thought provoking. The atmosphere, characterisation and depth are all really well crafted and with Sean Barrett narrating it can't get better. I had a couple of false starts trying find a series on a par with Robotham and Jussi but this is right up there and I'm so glad to have found it.

Just about as hard bitten as it gets. Awesome

Sean Barrett narates this story well as he does with many others, the story itself is ok but I think it could have been a tad more exciting...I dont think Lennox is my cup of tea.
