Summary

Witness the rise of man’s first galactic federation: The Terran Alliance.

When Simon and Katherine Hawke stumble upon an alien shuttle that has landed on earth, it’ll not only change the course of their lives, but of the entire world. Taking the shuttle into orbit, they discover a much larger ship left adrift with no one on board. Commandeering it, they confirm that we’re not alone in the universe and must prepare the human race for what is about to come.

Recruiting from all over the world, they begin to expand their fleet and build a federation to give humans a foothold in the galaxy. Thus, the Terran Alliance is formed, led by Simon, Kitty, Gayle, and their new comrades.

Everything is going according to planned as they construct more ships, but the governments of the world are vying for control of these technologies. To make matters worse, their second encounter with an alien species is not one of peace. After the attack, they are left with more questions than answers as they face resistance from, not only outer space, but their home planet as well.

It's not working for me

I'm on about chapter 7 and I'm struggling. The characters just aren't very good and the dialogue/characters thoughts are basically juvenile in their sophistication. The general plot interests me but it is frankly very poorly written. The characters seem wooden and there is nothing for Mark Boyett to work with. I'll give it another 5 chapters but I doubt I'll finish it.

update: no I can't finish it. Truly dreadful. The characters just don't have any "realness".

Very poor

Very childish writing, I don’t know anyone who would converse like this. Awful. Go take a listen to Craig Alanson, or anything read by RC Bray. How did this get past a proofreader

Beautiful Idea, ruined by being nauseatingly woke.

The general idea behind this story ... a feel good pro-human story tale of boot-strapping space industrialisation is excellent (a la Bobiverse).

Mark Boyett as narrator is superb (as always).

The actual characters ... pass the barf bag: Hyper emotional, hyper virtuous, condescending, self righteous ... and worst of all ... 100% morally flawless. And the bad guys ... 100% predictable, and 100% bad, bad, bad.

Verdict: wasted opportunity.

Narrator is great as always, story is pretty poor.
Characters feel completely flat and unlikeable.

Admin in space

Humans find a ship that requires 900 crew so a couple and a few friends then spend most of the book selecting and recruiting these people. It's like a documentary about Starfleets HR department; a lot of admin, very little action or interesting plot development.

Far too much SJW

The core story of this book is great, the ideia of "Civilians" taking care of such a great gift is pretty cool, and Mark Boyett as always did a great performance!

But the SWJ force is strong on this one. This book is all about woman, looks like this book have just one male character on it kkkkk.

Good book but too much of SWJ.

Childish Writer Rant

The fiction book starts with a message from the writer about his nutty views of the world. It continued into the fiction book until I busted out laughing for the third time and gave up.

Fail

Interesting idea but the characters are irritatingly stupid. How did this get on audible. I haven’t finished the book so maybe I will change my review. Blah blah blah.

dumb characters and silly senarios abound

I feel like this book was written as a highschool project by someone with no personal growth or insight into the real workings of people or society as a whole. From the silliness of the technology and how the characters figure it out is just too juvenile to even wrap my head around. I gave up 8 hours in, there is no hope for it. Definitely skip this.

Oh, and I don't know what the top review is talking about when they complain about this being a book with forced gender reversal roles. That is NOT the case. The main female characters even gives her command to her husband because she wants to make sure that the command is taken seriously. I mean what the hell......

Gone too soon but Left Behind a great legacy

While the ending is predictable this is one of those books where is the journey that's important we grapple with what if civilians got their hands on a ship we deal with the personal the political the psychological of dealing with this and dealing with the greater galactic implications that we searched to see in this book I like this book like dune it's something where you don't just read it you get into it I just wish that podium would put the all the books out every months in this series Because the 1st book is OK and the reason why I mean just it in the next one is because podium with smart and put in exerts from the next book so hopefully it'll be out sooner than later because this is Stephanie 1 where you want to read all of the books in the series in 1 sitting otherwise it could get lost in a library or overlooked for the presses gem that it is

Actually, it got better. Nice twist Protagonists vs USA

Not your typical feel-good space opera, yet it is satisfyingly feel-good. A bit annoying & Pollyanna-like in some ways, the twists of conflict & cooperation do certainly mirror the views of many Americans. Mark Boyett is not quite my favorite reader, but does a good job overall. The aliens in the next book could be interesting.

An amazing story of hope and betrayal

Imagine the chance to change human destiny for the better. Now imagine the fear of a US government afraid of losing power, position, and privilege. The collision of these values is the basis of this story. As a professional peacemaker, I can hardly wait to see how this shakes out. This is a must buy and a must listen.

my recommendation a thumb and a half

The main characters in the beginning we're indecisive couldn't make a decision and I thought some of the decisions they made could have been a little better but at the story went on the character development got better and the storyline got better I have to say in the beginning I was about to return the book but it's very good I like it at the end now I'm hooked
