About this listen

A trainee jockey has been kicked to death by an aggressive stallion at the local stables. Deemed an accidental death, the case is closed. But when the jockey’s brother returns from active service, he sparks an armed siege, demanding the investigation be re-opened and the truth uncovered.

Still recovering from the physical and mental scars of his last case, Detective Inspector Nick Dixon is dragged deep into a murky world of betting scams and murder, where people will do anything to keep their secrets. Even if that means silencing a DI who keeps asking the wrong questions about the wrong dead jockey...

Kickback is the third novel in the highly acclaimed DI Nick Dixon Crime Series.

Brilliant series, managed to binge read all the books and now very happy the audiobooks have been released! Great performance. Can’t wait to start listening to the next one now!

Fantastic

The writing isn’t brilliant, is sometimes weakened by awkwardness but is never excruciatingly bad, as in so much detective fiction these days. And the narrator is great at voices and accents, and even has that most important skill for a narrator of being able to disappear behind the various personalities. Good stuff!

Well-made stories, well performed

I am new to this series and I'm really enjoying it - the narration is great. But the one thing that's bothering me a little is that Nick Dixon is so rude! I have worked with countless senior officers and not one of them would speak to their staff or the public in the way DI Dixon does! Honestly with his attitude, he wouldn't last 5 minutes the real world (which I know this isn't). A minor critique but it does make me wince!!

Great Police Procedural Series

Yet another excellent story from Damien Boyd. His series “DI Nick Dixon Crime” is fantastic.

I really enjoyed this latest episode in the series. It has a great plot with a lot of twists and turns that keep you guessing until the end.

It’s good how Damien Boyd follows up things that have happened in previous episodes. He doesn’t make them integral to the latest plot, so if you’ve not listened to previous episodes you can still listen to this as a standalone audiobook.

My only fault is I just wish the story was longer. So it’s not really a criticism it just shows how much I’ve enjoyed listening to it.

The narrator is brilliant. He uses his skill to bring each character to life.

Overall, I think this audiobook is well worth listening to. I’m looking forward to the next instalment.

An Enjoyable Canter Through a Brilliant Audiobook

The storyline is presented in a format easy to follow, but with enough twists and turns to keep the listener engaged. A very “English” mystery!

Well crafted characters, very believable!
