Summary

Spring, 1909, and Lady Hardcastle, amateur sleuth and all-round eccentric, is enjoying a well-deserved rest. But a week after a trip to the cattle market, Spencer Caradine, a local farmer, turns up dead in the pub, face-down in his beef and mushroom pie. Once again, it is up to Lady Hardcastle and her maid, Florence, to solve the case.

Armed with wit and whimsy, not to mention Florence's mean right hook, the pair set out to discover what really happened and why. Was it poison or just ill luck?

As they delve further into their investigation, they encounter a theft where nothing is stolen, a séance with a troubled ghost and an ever-increasing number of Spencer's family and friends who might just have motive for murder. One thing's for sure: Lady Hardcastle has a mystery on her hands.

Good old fashioned detective story

What made the experience of listening to In the Market for Murder the most enjoyable?

The excellent narration enabled me to imagine the characters well

What was one of the most memorable moments of In the Market for Murder?

I really liked the interaction between Lady Hardcastle and Flo.

What about Elizabeth Knowelden’s performance did you like?

She read with a normal voice! Some narrators seem to have strange way of ending sentences on an uplift like a question. Elizabeth reads as if she is talking to you which is much better.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Some bits made me laugh out loud!

Foul language excluded .

A welcome change from the now fashionable foul language detective stories available today , and , nobody felt it necessary to throw up at the least provocation . Narration a bit twee though for my liking .

A very enjoyable book.

Loved the book and the narrator was very good though Welsh pronunciation was sometimes odd.

This is the second audio book in this series I've listened to, and it's just as brilliant.

Planning to get the rest. 😊

Lovely

This is an easy book to listen too.

I quite enjoyed how it’s written from the maids point of view and the relationship she has between herself and her mistress.

The narrator voice is very soothing and words are missed pronounced except for one and that’s quite understandable

Up the women!

Clever, funny, exciting, charming, gutsy, adventurous ripping yarns of two splendidly brave Edwardian ladies!
I love these books! If you crossed Sherlock & Watson with Blackadder, threw in a bit of Oscar Wilde, you'd get Lady Hardcastle & Florence Armstrong.
So rare you get protagonists who are so likeable, entertaining, believable and female to boot. Write faster Mr Kinsey, we need more! (I'm sure this will be on tv before long)
Elizabeth Knowelden's narration is also exemplary. It's quite possible to forget that only one person is speaking.
All round, these books are stonkingly good.

Clever intertwining of three fun mysteries

This is a terrific sequel to A Quiet Life in the Country. The book takes three mystery lines and intertwines them effectively. There is the death of a cruel man that might be from poisoning. A ghost accuses a member of the group doing a seance of murder. And the plaques and awards from a rugby club get stolen. I enjoyed the way the threads of the mysteries end up intertwined.

The book is very fun, with clever word play and banter between Lady Hardcastle and her maid, Florence, who narrates the book. I loved this book and am waiting on tenterhooks for the third book to released on June 15!

Plenty of murder suspects in English countryside

Once again Lady Hardcastle and her lady's maid tackle a murder investigation in the country. Plot is thick with suspects and paranormal activity, and keeps the reader busy trying to guess who and why someone would want a villager or two dead. A little more complicated plot than the previous adventure, but worth the read.

Fun book to listen to

This is the second book in this series that I have listened to. I purchased book one of the series as a kindle book with accompanying audio. I didn't like reading the book, but the audio version was wonderful. I think you need the English accents to make the story "live". The story line is a bit like Agatha Christie mysteries. The performance is very good, lots of different voices, not just someone reading the book. The story also has humor and a lightness that I have thoroughly enjoyed. I recommend this audible book to anyone who likes who done it type mysteries and also English settings at the turn of the century. Lady Hardcastle and Flo are exciting women for their time. Which makes it all the more fun.

Light cozy mystery

With my Kindle Unlimited account In the Market for Murder cost me only $1.99 plus tax. In my view it is worth what I paid for it, but not much more. The murder mystery is light and fun but is otherwise unimpressive. This Lady Hardcastle series is very highly rated and popular, so my rating is an outlier; for me this novel was barely okay while most listeners and readers found it delightful. So be it!
