About this listen

Liverpool: a suburban crime family grips a whole city with fear.

And their ambition reaches further still.

Galicia: an entire community waits on the windswept edge of Europe for the delivery of four tonnes of cocaine, brought across the ocean in an almost unbelievable craft.

London: Jonas Merrick, grey and quiet, alone in a small office, seems an unlikely character to be tasked with bringing down an international drug network.

But while Jonas's colleagues regard him as scratchy, fastidious, old, he is also ruthless, cunning and brutally pragmatic. And he has a man on the inside: a would-be money-launderer on that wild Spanish coast. A man who has been undercover for so long, he has almost forgotten who he really is.

And he is due to come home. Has to. For he will be given no mercy if he is caught.

But Jonas needs him to stay.

The superb Jonas Merrick is fast becoming one of the great figures of British spy fiction. In At The Kill may be his most compelling story yet.

A real cracker of a story with characters from the past making a brief appearance. Loved it.

Fantastic

This was, in the end, a good tale. Very explicit in parts and also very goary, It was disjointed and hard to follow at the beginning. It took some time to follow the thread as It jumped from one part of the story to another. Once fathomed out the process made good listening. I couldn't wait to know how the story would conclude.

Undercover operation re. Drugs. The undercover op was to expose crime families both in the uk and spain.

all the characters were positively drawn up, good and bad, some very frightening others not so but still interesting, definitely a story of today.

Ben Allen is superb at reading...omg, the accents were superb, his reading voice is mellifluous and a pleasure to listen to. I will look for anything that he reads in future. The story is brilliant, twists and turns, tension and anticipation. well worth it.. enjoy

I don’t usually listen to series, especially when I find the narration, or editing of the narration, irritating. I grumbled about it in my review of book two. What stood out to start with was the in-breath at the beginning of every sentence. There are tools to manage that, or at least it can be edited out. He didn’t have too many accents to juggle this time, just dialects, so he coped reasonably well with that. But am I the only person who notices mispronunciation? It’s quite easy to edit a sentence, but maybe he doesn’t even notice when he mispronounces words. One that stood out to me this time was ‘cavalcade’, pronounced ‘calvacade’. Maybe it was a typo in the book and he thought it should be read as written. 🤷‍♀️
If you can ignore all that (and clearly many do, judging by the raving reviews) then I can recommend this series. The hero and his long-suffering wife are brilliant, and they add warmth and humour to great story lines. So, I don’t normally listen to series, but I am this time. I love it, and am off to start the next one, curious to know what Jonas will be trying to sort out this time.

Love the stories enough to cope with the poor narration
