Summary

Sam Cleave, reporter for a small newspaper, has seen better days. After his partner was killed during an undercover investigation, he lost his passion for work and living.

But when a resident of a nearby assisted living home is tortured and murdered in a barbaric manner, he starts investigating. He is especially intrigued when a mysterious box is given to him that belonged to the dead man, but he needs help to interpret what it means.

He teams up with Nina Gould, an expert in World War II history. Soon the two of them realize that they are about to discover one of the best-guarded secrets of the war. It dawns on them that this would be the discovery of a lifetime, a discovery of immeasurable value, and a discovery that men would kill for. They join an expedition, sponsored by an eccentric billionaire, hunting for gold and breathtaking art buried deep below the Antarctic surface. Instead of gold and stolen art, they find something terrifyingly disturbing beneath the eternal ice.

A team of Nazi scientists has made an amazing discovery. But experiments have gone terribly wrong. The situation gets out of hand, and before long the expedition members find themselves peering into the deepest recesses of the human soul. Nina and Sam realize that their only hope for survival is to unlock the secrets of Ice Station Wolfenstein.

Ruined by the narration

Really disappointed as the premise of this sounded interesting, but I can’t get beyond chapter one thanks to the awful narration. The narrator is butchering a Scottish accent to the point where it’s hard to even understand him (and I’m Scottish), and by about the third sentence is mispronouncing names etc. I could’ve coped if the Scottish accent only appeared in the prologue but since the main character is also being read this way, I can’t continue with this. First time I’ve really felt like I want my money back.

Um .... no

Genuinely thought with the fantastic world of Pendergast in his belt this book would hold huge potential.
It’s not great.
It reads like a straight to TV movie.
The narrator has just one accent he does well and the rest are cheesy.
When not in character his rendition is wooden and uninspired.
I’m really disappointed.

A good story with a lot of names and ideas people will relate to

It took me a while to get on with the narrator. He seemed to be trying to hard but after a couple of chapters it got better (or i stopped noticing) enjoyed the book and its references to real American army projects and other similar ideas.

Shocking narrator

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who thinks Dick van Dyke can do a good cockney accent!

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Haven't got to the end, and I'm not sure I will, as although the story is good so far the performance means I spend more time shouting at it than listening to it!

What didn’t you like about Dan Lawson’s performance?

He has a tin ear for accents - his 'Scottish' is 'Groundskeeper Willy' by way of Lancashire, Louisiana and, I think, China? And please can someone tell him how to pronounce Berkshire and taciturn?

Any additional comments?

Surely someone involved in the production actually listens to the performance? Why not use a narrator who can make at least an approximation of the right accent?

Intriguing and Ultimately disappointing

It started well and the story line was interesting and showed promise. Unfortunately the end was rushed and written with more implausibility than previously seen.
The characters are pretty one dimensional, each with a weakness that the author ignores or excuses when he needs to move the tale along.
The narration is pretty awful, wooden in the extreme. I wondered if it was a deliberate tongue in cheek performance to understand how the narrator mauls the English language.
Surprisingly though I got all the way to the end and worked my way through the second offering.

Deadly Expedition

Sam Cleave, washed up journalist is asked by his cop best friend Paddy to help with the investigation into the brutal murder of an elderly German. When he is given a mysterious box it leads him on a deadly adventure to find Nazi treasure and a secret Ice Station.

Along the way he teams up with beautiful WWII history expert Dr. Nina Gould and eccentric billionaire Dave Purdue. During a treacherous Antarctic expedition the team discovers the secret Nazi base and the deadly secret it contains. A deadly secret that could destroy the world. The battle to survive has begun!

Overall this was an excellent fast paced action thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed despite the poor narration and my growing dislike of the self absorbed Nina.

I will continue listening to the series as I fell in love with Sam. An everyday hero facing extraordinary situations bravely and with a wicked sense of humour. Roll on the next deadly adventure.

Pulp

This is quality pulp fiction. Don't get me wrong there's nothing it's very enjoyable. Sometimes you want a stake dinner in a 4 star hotel other this a sandwich in your underpants, this is the sandwich and is the sandwich.

Its enjoy enough, as soon as I finished I started on the next. But the plot isn't to in-depth or taxing.
