Critic reviews

The best thriller I've read in ten years... An astonishing piece of work (Linwood Barclay)
THRILLER OF THE WEEK. Delivers thrills and spills...A full tilt mix of Homeland, The Wire and The Bourne Ultimatum
I Am Pilgrim is a 21st century thriller: a high concept plot, but with finely drawn protagonists. The plot twists and turns like a python in a sack. The style is visceral, gritty and cinematic...A satisfying and ambitious book, written with skill and verve (Adam LeBor)
Rendition yourself into a pulsating thriller that never lets up as it carries the hero and the reader on an ever more desperate race between time and an all too plausible disaster for the world we live in. Great nail-biting stuff!
The narrative is thrilling: the tension tightens with action...It's a murder mystery, an illuminating account of contemporary international politics and a study of an unusual man......An excellent thriller which as a first novel is really remarkable
I Am Pilgrim takes the modern spy novel and pushes it screaming and kicking into the twentieth-first century. With a stunning sense of plot, beautifully detailed writing, huge ambition and even huger talent, Hayes has produced one of the most memorable novels of recent times. This is a frightening, pulse-pounding journey into the future of terrorism and the brave new world we’ve been ushered into. Amazingly assured and complex, this is one of the best debut novels I’ve ever read
Clever and compulsive - the best thriller in years (Deidre O'Brien)
Terry Hayes' I AM PILGRIM delivers smart, compelling and wildly inventive storytelling, told on an ambitious scale with total command. A masterful novel and a terrific read
Massive in many senses, but none more so than its ability to exert a vice-like grip on the reader....Destined to be spy thriller of the year
As relevant as today's headlines. A scary trip through the shadowy world of international espionage. Just hope that Pilgrim is on our side. Terrific. No, on second thoughts, better than terrific

Firstly I want to highlight that the only version available on Audible in November 2016 is the full complete book. It is not in two parts like other reviewers have apparently experienced.

It was an entertaining book, good pace and fairly well written. The story was a bit far fetched, and a lot of the science was made up or exaggerated, but I didn't mind that so much. - it's fiction and you just have to go with it and enjoy it.

But I agree with other reviewers that it is rather black and white: The Americans are the heroes against a mostly all, either evil or dumb/corrupt etc world of muslims and Russians.

The narrator was mostly very good, in all the non-accent parts - his voice is clear, easy and pleasant to listen to. But his range of accents is quite limited. He has no idea what a Turkish accent sounds like, which was a bit annoying since the book has quite a lot of Turkish characters. His British accent was terrible as was his Italian.

All in all I would probably still recommend this book as an entertaining listen.

Exciting but a bit too full of cliches

If you could sum up I Am Pilgrim, Volume 1 in three words, what would they be?

Far-fetched, fast-paced and light reading...

Any additional comments?

I thought it was OK as a story goes. It's along the lines of many well worn espionage thrillers and reminded me of a series of 24, all style and no real substance. It's good entertainment and I enjoyed it. I thought it was well read and it's not too heavy going (to say the least). Would I read another one if the main character was revised? Maybe, but ultimately, it's the kind of book you read and forget about.

Bit of a con splitting it into two books...

Two plots for the price of one and a book as long as two good books makes this an easy choice, intelligent, with a good plot, plenty of action and entertainment, the agent code name Pilgrim has a super hero background, and the opponent has a compelling story too.

The science and the forensics of the story are very good, some of the geographical moves of the terrorist are scarily contemporary to our current situation (Germany), that was a bit of a surprise since the book was written pre Merkel’s invitation.

Pure entertainment with good characters and a good plot that reflects our world news, I just hope we Have a few pilgrims in our service.

Perfect murder, a saracen plot to destroy America

Would you listen to I Am Pilgrim, Volume 1 again? Why?

I would listen to it again but knowing the wonderful twists this book has i'd leave it some time, but I will return!

What other book might you compare I Am Pilgrim, Volume 1 to, and why?

I am Pilgrim book 2 as it was written by the same dude and read by Christopher. :p

In honest I cannot compare really, I don't really read this genre of books, only reason I did was because of Christopher Ragland reading it and I was blown away! It's brilliant. Both in narration and the way it was written.

Which character – as performed by Christopher Ragland – was your favourite?

My favourite character I could not pick out. Probably the hotel manager in book two, he was awesomes!
