Summary

Guiding becomes a deadly business when Kate Shugak accepts a contract to shepherd a group of German computer executives on an Alaskan hunting retreat. As the fog rolls in and people start dying, Kate and her boyfriend Jack discover how very seriously their charges take the sport. A hunter's moon signals a season of gathering and plenty, but Kate finds herself out of resources and at her most vulnerable. She must find the strength to not only survive, but repay. This time, the guide becomes the huntress.

Top Notch

Five stars. Well deserved in my opinion. I travelled alongside the storyteller through the Alaskan wilderness relishing every twist and turn of the book. 😁

The Best Kate Shaguk.

This book is by far the best of the series. It is full of suspense, backstory, and character development. Kate, Jack and Mutt are working as hunting guides in the bush. But the clients are anything but likable. They are disrespectful, arrogant, and Kate is fearful that it might be worse than that. When one client dies Kate and Jack must stay safe, protect their clients and investigate without alerting the killer. It sets up a story that is so much tighter, darker and sadder than any we have seen in the series so far.

Warning! This book will punch you in the gut and leave you slightly (or more) sad.

Worst Kate Shugak book ever!

Nothing happens in this book until you're halfway in and then it's like a boulder rolling downhill. The characters are described in excruciating detail twice. Every action and scene was also described in minute detail. Add to that a seriously rotten ending. Don't waste your credit/money.

Pivot Point

This book is chock full of action, suspense, mystery, adventure, joy and sorrow. As the title suggests, it's about big game guiding in Alaska--gone bad in this instance. Stabenow's writing is great and kept me on the edge. Her characters are very real, the scenes vivid and believable. The pivot point of the series is in here, and I almost fell off my bicycle when I heard it. Then, Kate goes mad with rage and serves up the perpetrator to a pervert--that's real revenge. With that said, I wonder what's next?

One of her best

Would you listen to Hunter's Moon again? Why?

Yes, I'd listen to it again but I still have the rest of the this series and her others to finish first.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Love Kate of course, but the irascible Uncle is also one of my favorites.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I've mentioned this before, and it's so true -- the thing about listening to the book now compared with reading it when it came out is that I've forgotten so much. So much, In fact, that I kept wondering if I'd somehow missed this one. Until the scene that made me cry. That scene was still in my mind's eye after all these years, but I was caught by surprise when it crept up on me again. I knew it was going to happen but I had no idea it was coming in this book.

Any additional comments?

Marguerite Gavin did an excellent job on this one, even with the male voices. Kudos to her!

awful

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I have enjoyed the few Kate Shugatk books I've read in the past, but this one was just crap. Unbelievable from beginning to end. People surviving unbeatable odds, sex thrown in just to titillate the female readers, unlikable characters......on and on. It will be a while before reading (or listening) to another Stabenow book.

What do you think your next listen will be?

something different

Would you listen to another book narrated by Marguerite Gavin?

yes

What character would you cut from Hunter's Moon?

all of them

Excellent but disappointed

The book is excellent but I wish it had ended differently. Very disappointed with the story. Not sure if I will continue the series. I'm not sure why the woman can't be a hero and have someone they love in their life. I wish I could find an author not threatened by love.

Narrator needs a punctuation lesson

Ever since book 1 of this series I’ve been surprised how poorly the narrator reads. She seems to treat commas as periods and periods as commas. At first I hoped that she would improve but no. Why do I keep listening? I like the characters and story lines and think also that it’s somewhat similar to how one of my cousins likes bad movies - it’s so bad it’s good.

I think I hold narrators up to the standard of Jim Dale, the Harry Potter series narrator, who literally could not be better. Gavin should learn the difference between commas and periods though, and the difference between the syntactically different comma uses too. Still hoping she’ll catch on in each next book.

I’m furious that an author would so drastically change things

It was starting out to be an excellent and very exciting story, but she destroyed it by killing off a major character. It was so uncalled for it sickens me. I don’t even want to finish the series.

Greed,Revenge and Great Frontier Justice

I love this book as it features Jack and some Mutt, but not enough to have me seek out more books trying to find the previous stories that feature them in heaps...So this author is not for me. Too often I felt this author writes in two dimensional for me at least. Author has us right there inside Kates head but???? I Can not put my finger on the exact reasons but I think, the mystery is not author’s main focus but the journey of the characters. However many of the characters lack depth for me eg Bobby who is in other stories and maybe featured, but I do not feel compelled to seek out that story. Books 10,12 are Trooper Jim stories, but reviews say #10 is not Ms Gavin narrating? I can only think that is because that book came from Audio Book stand which would have been on CD or Cassette and copied to download. The sample is poor quality and reviews like the story but not the narrator who was supposed to be Ms Gavin. Reviewers did not feel the voice had the richness and range of Ms Gavin other work . The poor quality took away the richness of Ms Gavin 2014 + narrations of whom I am a new fan. See Happieness for Beginners
I do use the 1.2 speed to match the adventure, give it a try.
