About this listen

As the new head coach of the Vancouver Orcas, Matt Shore has got his work cut out for him. Coming off a season where the Orcas came in last in the entire AHL, Matt’s job is to whip his new hockey team into shape for the oncoming season.

He doesn’t need any distractions, especially not one in the form of a tall, dark, and gorgeous antiques dealer.

Who’s also his ex—and his best player’s father.

Pierce Langley-Brown has a lot of regrets. The biggest? Leaving Matt behind two years ago when his son needed him. Now, with his son on Matt’s hockey team, there’s no avoiding the man who once owned his heart.

Not that Pierce wants to avoid him. And that heart? It still belongs to Matt.

But will Matt choose to keep it after all this time?

I loved Game Plan when I read it with my eyes and I got to love it all over again when I listened to the audiobook. Aaron Hokanson is a new-to-me narrator and I enjoyed listening to him narrate this story. His voice is pleasant to listen to. I think he could use a bit more emotion / acting ability when reading the book but he only has a few books on Audible so perhaps he’s new to audiobook narration. In any case, I think he did a good job. There isn’t any more that I can add other than what I said when I reviewed the e-book so a copy of that review is shown below:

I have been a huge Amy Aislin fan for several years now and her latest book, Game Plan, didn’t change that one bit. 😊 Second chance stories are one of my favorite romance tropes and Game Plan is such a good one. Pierce and Matt were together for over a year when Pierce broke things off abruptly two years ago with no explanation. Matt tried and tried to reach him, to no avail. Pierce’s sister Sabrina also tried to reach him but Pierce didn’t respond to any calls or texts.

This story really got to me in places. There’s a content warning for mental health and depression and that hit a bit close to home as I have family members who suffer from this. I think Amy treated this subject with respect and understanding. From my personal perspective I think she got things right.

When Pierce was notified that his son was in a car accident, he left Vancouver, and Matt, to go to him and then he fell apart. He finally started seeing a therapist and is doing much better when his professional hockey player son gets traded to Vancouver – where Matt lives.

Matt still loves Pierce but he doesn’t know if he can ever trust him with his heart again. It doesn’t take long for Matt to give in to the physical attraction he has for Pierce but it takes much longer for him to trust again. Then there’s the little problem of a coach dating a player’s parent and the team owner’s reaction to when Matt discloses their relationship.

It’s not all smooth sailing for Pierce and Matt but they get a great HEA and the epilogue was the perfect finishing touch. I’m so glad to know that there will be two more books in this series. Each of them will stand alone but I’m happy that I will be reading them in order. I’m looking forward to the next one, Game Changer, coming out later this year.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

A great start for a new series!

Second chance romance is not always my favourite trope, however, I did enjoy this one. There was no huge fallout incident that caused their fallout so it was definitely believable that the pair would get back together.

I loved the inclusion of a grown up child, which I only rarely see in romance books now. Hockey romance is such a loaded sub genre now that I thought this book was missing something to make it an absolutely perfect read.

The narrator is very new to me so I had to get used to hearing a different voice but he did extremely well being the voice of two different characters. Excited now for book 2 from the same narrator.

Great performance from a new to me narrator

I love Vancouver and was thrilled to see Amy had set her new hockey series here. I don’t see enough Canadian-based stories and am always thrilled to grab one when I do. I have to say, I instantly fell in love with Matt, the hockey coach for the AHL’s Vancouver team, the Orcas. He’s got a bit of a crazy family, a very west coast attitude, and a heart of gold. He clearly loves his players and wants the best for them.

So when one gets ill, he’s worried. Then the player’s father shows up and…oops. Matt’s ex-boyfriend. The man he loved. The man he’s never forgotten. Only now Pierce is back in Matt’s life and…things are about to get super awkward.
Pierce left Vancouver two years ago to head to Québec when his son needed him most. But things didn’t go well there and instead of reaching out and talking to Matt, he let the relationship die a horrible death. His son’s been traded to Vancouver and Pierce plans to make the best of it. Except…how did he think he could be in the same town as Matt – with his son playing on Matt’s team – and they somehow weren’t going to wind up running into each other? Pierce at least knew this was coming – Matt was completely blindsided.

But that chemistry is still there. The love’s still there. The men just have to figure out if they can make things work while also navigating the perils of Matt being Pierce’s son’s coach. I did wonder if things were going to work out. But this is an Amy Aislin romance, so I got my happily ever after.

I have to say Aaron Hokanson was a new narrator to me, but he did a brilliant job. I also enjoyed the meta aspect of Matt’s side gig. Chuckles all around. I loved this book and was happy the second one was available right away.

My favorite city!

I loved Matt and Pierce's second-chance romance, and their happy ending was so freaking sweet. The storytelling was engaging, I felt connected to the characters right away, and the love between these men was addictive and sweet. The more I learned about what led Pierce to leave Matt in the first place, the more my heart went out to him for all he had to deal with at the time. I'm glad he was able to get to a place where he could reconnect with friends and family and learn better coping mechanisms for the future, but I know firsthand that mental health is a constant journey. Thankfully Matt wasn't the type of man to hold grudges indiscriminately, and though he was wary at first, he slowly began to open himself back up to the potential he and Pierce had. It was wonderful to watch them rekindle a friendship that soon grew into more than just friendly hangouts, and before long their emotional bond felt as strong as ever. The only thing hanging over their heads was telling Pierce's son about their relationship, and despite the buildup and initial tension, Pierce and Matt handled it as well as they could have. I couldn't be happier with how rock solid their relationship was by the end of the book, and though I'm sure Matt and Pierce will have ups and downs, there's no doubt in my mind that they're ready to tackle whatever comes next.

I don’t usually read second chances with the same person’s books, but this one has a lot of good points.
They didn’t jump into bed at the fist opportunity—but the second. I’d have liked if they have taken their time to rebuild trust though.
It also doesn’t have an excessive number bed scenes, and the author doesn’t dwell on them. A rarity that will make me read more of her books.
The delaying about confessing to Jason was a bit annoying; I didn’t like when it was said that Pierce and Jason didn’t need to apologise, they did what they thought was best but it’s good if they are sorry for it, no need to downplay it; and I don’t agree with how pretty much any of the characters manage things, but I enjoyed the book anyway, which is a good thing. I’ll keep reading more of the author.

«But forgiveness and trust are two different things».
