About this listen

Victoria Coren Mitchell's gripping poker memoir now available for the first time in audio.

In September 2006, Victoria Coren Mitchell won a million dollars on the European Poker Tour. For Richer, for Poorer tells the story of that victory, but also of a 20-year obsession with the game. It is a journey which has taken Victoria from a secret culture of illegal cash games to the high-stakes glamour of Las Vegas and Monte Carlo, and brought with it friendship, laughter, and money, but also loneliness, heartbreak and defeat. With disarming honesty, Victoria lays all of this bare. For Richer, for Poorer also tells the story of the poker revolution. How did this cult card game, populated by a small community of colourful and eccentric players, move from the back streets to the mainstream in a few short years? It is a fascinating story from a trusted insider.

For Richer, for Poorer was published in 2009. This audiobook was recorded in 2023.

Really interesting for a non poker player, really envied the community of players that Victoria found herself in

Loved it!

Victoria’s openness to her thoughts and feelings - amazing anecdotes and insight as to the poker players who have seen such a sea change in their game. Again it needed her narration to convey the sincerity of her love for the game and the friends she has met. The listener does not need to be a poker player to appreciate the book as Victoria conveys the highs and lows they go through. She is extremely intelligent, articulate and uses superb skill to describe the game and how it becomes an addiction/way of life for this group of people who are her family.

Excellent listen

An educational, entertaining and moving look back at Victoria’s love affair with the game of poker. The characters, the locales, and the games themselves are brought to life by her brilliant narration.

I know nothing about poker, but I truly admire Coren Mitchell and so I thought I’d have a listen. Yes, the book is about her love for the game and her experiences as a player, but it transcends this in some of the most elegant and beautiful writing about life, love and family. I heartily enjoyed it and find myself wanting to get out a pack of cards.

A beautifully told memoir

funny, honest, kind about friend and foe alike. I know many of the characters from the Vic and their fond portrayals made me smile. I was at the table in Holland Casinos when the Dutch man made his comment about remembering his youth. Curiously I can still remember his face and the entire scene with Vicky playing poker, chatting and drinking tea whilst writing a coluumn to meet a fast approaching deadline on her pre smartphone phone. Oh and great poker advice here too without being preachy.

Breathtakingly honest
