Summary

The Spellmonger series continues with a search for answers in The Lost Land of Anghysbel....

After winning two wars against the Nemovorti, Minalan plans an expedition to The Lost Valley of Anghysbel, in the far north of his realm. It's there, in the caldera of a supervolcano at the edge of the tundra, he suspects many of the answers he so desperately needs might be hidden. The only problem is that thanks to the anti-magical properties of the jevolar, his spells won’t work; he’ll be without magic for the first time since he came into his Talent. On this quest for the knowledge to save the world, the stakes are too high to be concerned about such things. Minalan seeks the knowledge he needs, no matter the price.

The Footwizard, Fondaras the Wise, has been to the realm of the jevolar four times in his long life. He knows the way, and he knows the great dangers of the non-magical land. He warns that Anghysbel is filled with forgotten creatures and lost races that have hidden from the world for eons. That doesn’t dissuade the Spellmonger—it’s a challenge. But once he’s there, Minalan’s expedition discovers a unique land filled with forgotten secrets.

Dark powers more ancient than the world dwell in exotic Anghysbel, powers that would speed Callidore’s destruction, not work for its salvation. Minalan the Spellmonger has to consider carefully if he’s willing to pay the price to save the world...and the cost of that bargain may well be his life.

The series is declining. Its a real shame.

I have to admit that I didn't enjoy this one as much as the others. For the first time it felt that Terry had properly run out of steam. Given the focus on spin off books (which I've mostly ignored) and the declining main series, I'll probably leave it now. Until now though it's been a breath of fresh air.

This review might seem a bit harsh, but fans tend to leave glowing reviews and fail to mention the negatives, so thought I'd put some time into this.

Very little actually happens in the first two thirds, which is mainly filled with heavy exposition, introducing new characters and plot lines but with no real action. At times, the same information is imparted twice, or Terry gives us the name for something obscure in five made up languages, to no apparent purpose. A lot of his other books have been guilty of this too, but was very bad in this one. I found my self saying 'oh come on, just get on with it' out load a few times. A lot of this should have been picked up in editing. Also WAY too many references to 'old earth' pop culture. I got the gist, no need to beat me to death with it and it was all a but cringey at times.

The usual strange (sexual/mysoginistic?) attitude to female characters continues here. I imagine most readers are male so won't care, but it is all slightly odd. The main female character has even taken on these same traits, being sex obsessed and making comments that you'd attribute to a 12 year old. Terry has a very odd view of women, even for a fantasy!

Generally, I have also found Terry's writing to be refreshingly original. But themes from this one were barely disguised Tolkien rip offs. Ent moots, balrogs, dwarves and mithril, its all here.

On the 'tekka', I'm not usually a fan of mixing fantasy (magic) with technology. Its messy and it can pull you out of the story. It wasn't too bad here but some references were still off-putting. Also, I've been reading a fantasy series until now so feel slightly peeved at the switch - but willing to give the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Last third really picked up though- so here's hoping the series gets back on track for those who want to continue. John Lee was dependably amazing in his narration. I think he saved this one for me - I'm not sure I'd have been able to finish a printed version.

One book to many, as the series going downwards

Book 13 is pointless to the overall theme of the series, in fact it is the most up and down book of the series to date. Sometimes its ok to good then it takes a turn into utter rubbish with too much story and plot repetition along with too much irrelevant padding. I didn’t understand the point of the many of the new characters and plot lines but with no real action.

What was the point of talking trees? And why the constant repeating of the same information.

When I enjoy a book, I can stay up all night listening, with this one I kept falling asleep.

I still enjoyed John Lee’s narration.

A good look at the wider universe!

Really enjoyed this book. It takes a good look at the wider universe and thankful the stakes have stopped climbing which was one of my few complaints of the series so far.

I would have enjoyed the ending exactly 1000 times more if the next book was already out!

I assume anyone reading a review of book 13 has read the others, so just buy it you already know you like it and this is more of the same with some actual answers.

just started already hate it

the story of only just started and I already hate it I think I'll be returning this book very shortly any new parent will just despise the start of a book that begins with a mother preferring to abandon her children to ophanhood in a petulant desire to travel a better way should have been found to include her than abandon young children maybe I'm over sensitive but hey

Utter Drek

Several hours worth of audiobook where lots is described and talked about and nothing whatsoever actually happens. There's no context to any of it. No drama. Just, so we're here, this is that, now we're going over here, and this happened, no, it had nothing to do with what just happened and it'll never be spoken of again. Utterly pointless, dull, and uninteresting.

Glad when the book concluded

The Spellmonger series has been my favourite book series for some time now...

This is the first book I have listened to and wished for it to end. I felt obliged to give it a chance.

If you want a flavour of the book just narrow your search to reviews with 1 to 3 stars, they are all pretty accurate.

John Lee saved the day with his narration, however this time Terry Mancour let the partnership down.

If the next book is as poor as this one, my Spellmonger journey will come to a premature end :(

Great addition to the series

Interesting way to move the series forward. Did we just get Rick rolled? two words.

another amazing book

this book adds very nicely to the story and had me left mouth agape at some of the storylines and plot twists
my biggest problem with this book is that the last 5 minutes tell about 2 books worth of story meaning the next few books will likely happened in parallel to this one meaning we don't find out what happens next for a while
