About this listen

The aging First Lord of Alera has fallen in battle. Yet his people must continue to resist an invading inhuman army. Desperate Alerans even pledge fealty to the Vord Queen to survive, turning the incredible power of Aleran furies back on their own people. And despite all efforts, the Alerans are being ground into dust and pushed to the farthest reaches of their own realm.

However, Tavi has returned with vital insights from the Canim Blood Lands. He knows how to counter the Vord and, more importantly, believes human ingenuity can equal fury-born powers. Now events are rushing towards a last stand, where Tavi and the last Aleran legions must formulate a dangerous new strategy, together. For a civilisation is on the brink of extinction.

A note for the listener: the previous audiobook narration contained sound effects (including trumpets) these have since been removed from the recording. If you already own this title in audio, please re-download the audiobook to your device.©2009 Jim Butcher

6 books later, I feel somewhat exhausted - it's like one enormous battle scene from start to finish.

Absolutely epic final battle. Although the outcome is somewhat inevitable, the wins and losses along the way were anything but predictable. It's a satisfying ending (perhaps too satisfying after such epic battles? but then, that's why we have water-crafting), with only a few threads that might have been more tidily handled (personal preference thing).

I thoroughly enjoyed this series. It's good, traditional epic fantasy: sword swinging; a sort of magic; goodies and baddies - and heroes to save the day (and the baddies even wear black!). I grew very fond of the characters, and was sad to say goodbye to this tale.

This is not a series you can join half-way through - you do really need to start at the beginning to fully understand all the characters. However, unlike my approach where I listened to all 6 books almost back to back, perhaps take a breather between instalments - might keep it feeling a little bit fresher. I've had to give this series 5 stars based on my compulsive need to download book after book - that surely says something about it.

Re narration: Kate Reading is not one of my favourite narrators, but she does an admirable job here, giving all the characters distinct voices - and she's consistent across the series, which must have been a challenge.

Outcome inevitable, but route interesting

It took me a while to get into book 1 and then I didn’t resume with book 2 for over a year. However in the past few weeks I have blasted through the remaining books and loved them. Fantastic world building, interesting characters and a superb plot.

An epic story and rewarding listen!

So i have just listened to all 7 Books in this series in 3 weeks. and i'm devastated its over.

I have read all these books before, but first time I've taken the opportunity to listen to it. The performance and voices used are simple but effective. so often people/narrators try to over complicate the characters tone or pacing. but this simple but distinct approach was pleasant and not distracting.

The world that Jim Butcher has created "Alera" is brilliant. the politics, class barriers, slavery and racial issues. are nothing new, its approach in equal measure, respect and realism. Of course the real world has all the same issues. its nice to read an author/listen. approuch it without shying away from the fact its a plan and simple fact of life.

His Character Arcs are not the most complex, but why does that have to be a bad thing. for me its a brake from recent novel and series where each charactor has and increasingly complex and diverse nature/moral. GRRM has a talent when it comes to these complex arcs. but leave it to him other attempts at adding layers and layers to peoples nature is incredibly hard to do well. Jim Butcher keeps it simple in the most complimentary way.

Shame its the last of the Alerian world and Lore.

Fitting Conclusion to an incredible series

A magnificent conclusion to the Codex Alera. If you are a fan of Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere, this is a must for you - and Kate Reading has delivered yet another superb performance.

Outstanding!

The audio book would have been more enjoyable if the producer hadn't felt the need to break up paragraphs with obnoxious horn sounds placed seemingly at random.

Obnoxious horn sounds interrupt flow
