About this listen
Andy "Duke" Ellington was an exceptional fighter pilot with a habit of biting off more than he should have been able to chew. Yet, somehow, he always came through it - whether that was luck or skill was an open debate. This was his life as political tensions rose and boiled over into military action. At least it was until it wasn't. He pushed too hard and too far and the end came for him.
And then...he was Elsewhere, in a completely different world with no support and only a marginal clue. Things like magic and stats were his new reality and he had no choice but to learn how to adapt. But he was "Duke" or "The Duke" as many called him. He lived his life on the edge and he would do no different in this world.
Imprisoned Archmages, corrupt rulers, mysterious forces from beyond, and ancient dungeons all wanted a piece of him. He was happy to take them all on. He would show everyone just who he was and what happened if you messed with "The Duke".
©2025 Douglas Lohse (P)2025 Douglas LohseSubjectively, which is how I rate and judge forms of entertainment, this is an excellent piece of work. I liked the plot, the main character (though he did seem a little too flippant at times), the world, and just found the entire story enjoyable. I liked the progression and how it was handled.
Objectively, the setting, story, and characters lacked some depth—settings and circumstances ought to be as fantastical as one can get away with, in my opinion, but the story and characters should similarly pursue as much verisimilitude as possible. I never truly found myself absorbed, hence why I took off one star. There was always some detail missing, some glaringly odd character reaction or progression that did not quite make sense.
Still, as far as enjoyment goes, which is the main reason anyone might read or listen to this, Doug has delivered. I liked Elsewhere the same way I like John Wick or Die Hard.
As for the narration, it was competent. Not outstanding, but more than passable. Some of the ways specific character interactions were handled had me wincing internally. A few had me scoff out loud. However, the narration was adequate for the most part.
Overall, great job, Mr. Lohse!
