Story
By now, the low-carb diet's refrain is a familiar one: "Bread is bad for you. Fat doesn't matter. Carbs are the real reason you can't lose weight. In The Low-Carb Fraud, longtime leader in the nutritional science field T. Colin Campbell outlines where and how the low-carb proponents get it wrong: Where the belief came from that carbohydrates are bad and why it persists despite all the evidence to the contrary. The foods we misleadingly refer to as "carbs" aren't all created equal, and treating them that way has major consequences for our nutritional well-being.

Carnism is the belief system, or ideology, that allows us to selectively choose which animals become our meat, and it is sustained by complex psychological and social mechanisms. Like other "isms", carnism is most harmful when it is unrecognized and unacknowledged. Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows names and explains this phenomenon and offers it up for examination. Unlike the many books that explain why we shouldn't eat meat, Joy's book explains why we do eat meat.

Eye opening
Joel Furhman's Eat to Live was my very first audiobook about nutrition and healthy living. It was an eye opening experience, finding out about all the toxic chemicals we consume day in, day out, through refined foods. While the title of this book focuses on the weight loss aspect, it is definitely worth mentioning that sticking to the plan proposed in this book will not only help you lose weight, it will fill you up with energy and make you much, much healthier. I'm very reluctant to believe in such 'promises' myself, yet listening to this audiobook and sticking to the plan has certainly done both of the above for me. (I don't even get migraines anymore now)
I have given the book 4 stars only because it is dry at some points, especially at the beginning where it focuses a lot on cancer research and studies.
All in all, I recommend this book to anyone who is ready to make some permanent, positive changes in their life, or is simply interested in the science behind nutrition.

Facts and tips excellent, delivery not so
What did you like most about Eat to Live?
All the points made were back up by well established fact and studies. Not just one study to prove one point, but multiple studies reviewed to produce recommendations. These are not the single sided arguments found in today brainwashing biased media.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Eat to Live?
The facts about protein levels in vegetables compared to meet and dairy.
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Joel Fuhrman?
I've seen Dr Fuhrman in interviews and I think he is a wonderful man doing real good in the world, but unfortunately the narration of this book is disjointed, stuttered and mistakes are made regularly. I think I would have cast someone like Joaquin Phoenix or another vegan/vegetarian actor used to giving monologues.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
An elephant is vegan, how do you think it got so big if you think veggies do not contain protein?
Any additional comments?
Great ideas and i'm looking forward to beginning the diet.

Great content - horrible delivery
What did you like best about Eat to Live? What did you like least?
I have both the book and the audiobook. If I hadn't already read a lot of the book, I honestly would have had trouble following the narration. I have English as a first language, so that is not a factor here.
It is painfully obvious upon listening to the flow of the narration that Dr. Fuhrman never read it aloud a few times first - just to get familiar with speaking the text. I felt I was listening to a 10 year old trying to read a complicated medical journal in front of the class!
Misread words aren't edited out, he just tries it again.
There are breaks in the narration for seconds at a time, obviously waiting for a stop clock of some sort to cue the next sentence.
Dr. Fuhrman slurs his speech by dropping consonants at the start and end of words (how does a doctor get "disease" to come out as "issease"?), and then the next line is dictated with two seconds between many of the words.
The "whistle sound of SSS" is most irritating and the volume varies too much for an audiobook, which is delivered directly into the ear!
The last words of the chapter roll together with the title of the next chapter! Seriously?? The new chaper is never announced.
The message in the book is exciting - nutrition from natural plant foods is the way to great health and weight, however, all that is negated by the irritation caused by the appalling delivery.
I kept wondering if Dr. Fuhrman was "under the influence" when he was recording this, but decided that he couldn't be over such a long period of time.
Maybe the author insisted on earning an extra few bucks for narrating his own book, but his talent is medicine, not narration.
"Horses for courses" as they say!
What did you like best about this story?
The information on nutrition is excellent and he has very good arguments for the nutritarian lifestyle.
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Joel Fuhrman?
Anybody...please...Audible has the best narrators in the business so I'm at a loss as to why this got through quality control!
If this book were a film would you go see it?
Um! It is already a film but if I mention where, Audible will reject my review because I name an outside source. His delivery wasn't any bit better there by the way, so no, I won't be rushing out to see anything.
Any additional comments?
I'm so frustrated at the deliver of this book that I can't even finish it. I'm seriously considering returning it. I had thought to buy his audiobook Super Immunity, but when I listened to the sample of it here, there was Dr. Fuhrman again, speaking more clearly, I'll grant you, but no sample of Ned Sparrow.
I'm not taking the chance!

This book has helped me turn a corner
I grew up with two working parents eating freezer food. Last year I watched my mother die of cancer and I believe her diet was the overriding factor.
I had terrible eating habits and this book was the right book for me to explain exactly how important diet is.
If you need to know why then this is the book for you. I follow this books dietary instructions to the letter in the week and ease of at the weekend. A month in I've lost a stone, I'm full of motivation including exercise and feel like it has completely changed my attitude to food.
Thank you.

The facts of what's healthy, and what's killing us
I was wary about downloading this audiobook based on the two poor reviews. Fortunately, I checked amazon's reviews and found over 270 5-star, more thorough reviews. I downloaded and listened to this audiobook during each gym workout. I was blown away by the wealth of research and results given in this book.
Let me quickly address the two reviews given here. Marianne, you're right when you say the recipes are not included in the audiobook version. However, very early in the audiobook, Dr. Fuhrman announces a website - his own website if I recall correctly - which apparently has a wealth of recipes along with a forum to connect to other users. Because I was in the middle of a gym workout, I wasn't able to write it down and will have to go back to it to obtain the address.
Rob, either you reviewed the wrong audiobook, or there's another reason for your inaccurate review that you haven't shared with us. I paid close attention and don't recall hearing even one mention of "miraculous". In fact, the only fad-type talk I heard was when Dr. Fuhrman was revealing the deception behind fad diets! And you mention how his quoting of medical studies turns you off... it's called supporting evidence. And unlike fad diets and so much of the confusing, conflicting information we receive, Dr. Fuhrman referenced a vast amount of credible sources with conclusive results. Lastly, I question your sincerity of actually listening to/reading this book. The whole point of the book is there is no miracle or way to cheat to lose weight. In fact, Dr. Fuhrman repeatedly reminds us that while short-term, immediate results are often favored by people looking to lose weight, the real importance are the long-term effects on our health and lives. That's precisely why the book is called, "Eat To LIVE".
Lastly, Dr. Fuhrman recommends also reading/listening to T. Colin's book, The China Study. I just finished it; it's another EXCELLENT, worthwhile book.

Extreme Transformative Information
If you are looking for a book about healthy eating and how to transform your health this is it. I won't say that this plant based eating program is easy to follow. It is foreign thinking in the world of the high fat, high protein, high sugar, refined foods of the American diet.
To me, it is simple to do at home where you can control what foods you stock in your kitchen--but the minute you leave the house for work or whatever it becomes more difficult. I'm just being very honest here--not negative. It is a definitely doable eating formula-- but it takes some planning and work to accomplish. That said--this eating style will transform how you feel. That transformation and renewed health then becomes the motivation to continue the program and work at all the changes required.
The book is clear, positive and informative. Dr Fuhrman is an MD with a proven track record at motivating change in his patients. The program is extreme--but the book explains the whys and hows and the reasons behind the theory. To my mind even if you take away only half of what is offered here you will be better off. But be aware this plan requires that you rethink everything you think you know about food and healthy eating.

Sound Nutrition Advice - No PDF with menus, recipe
Sound program - difficult to follow but the improvements you experience happen so quickly and are so dramatic it does seem miraculous.
The reason I gave this only 4 stars is that I consider it to be incomplete. If you intend to really follow this program you will have to buy the book as well.
I think it is unfair to audible customers that some of the key charts and tables, the menus and recipes in the book that are necessary to fully implement this program are not provided to audible readers in a PDF.

Have lost 33 pounds so far.
In 28 days, my blood pressure went from 139 over 85 to 113 over 65. I lost 23 pounds, sleep better and feel amazing. My blood sugar (on meds) would spike up to 13.3 and at the end of 28 days... 5.4 (I am now off meds but am still monitoring - If I cheat, my levels rise - we are what we eat)
Do NOT underestimate how potentially powerful this eating system can be, if you first understand it, and second, follow it. I recently had my blood pressure checked again, and with activity, it was 120 over 68.
Not bad at all considering. Read it, understand it, use it and enjoy weight loss feeling full with more foor than are before I started this diet and now enjoy amazing health results. (When I first started this system of eating, I weighed in at 303 pounds)

Really Good Information
Enjoyed listening to it (didn't think I would). The information really 'clicked' in my head and am walking away feeling more knowledgeable about nutrition. I don't know, maybe this time I was ready to 'hear' it. I am annoyed that the recipes are not included and maybe Audible should mention that in the description. I'm a foodie and I probably would have bought the book instead of the audio version because of it. I emailed Dr. Fuhrmans' website stating I bought the audio book from this site and if they had a link to the recipes. Nope. Bummer. You have to become a member and pay a monthly fee for access.... not. I guess if I search the WWW I'll find something (or I guess I'll buy the darn book) :o). Nonetheless... This audio book is great. Recommended.

Miraculous is the word.
I have been following the Eat To Live regimen for two years. I have never before been able to lose weight so effortlessly... my migraines are gone... I cured my high cholesterol in 30 days... my mother cured her high blood pressure and angina in 6 months. I love eating the Eat To Live way and would never go back to old habits. For those who have an open mind and a sense of purpose, Eat To Live is miraculous indeed. Also read The China Study by T.Colin Campbell and Dr. Fuhrman's Nutritional Excellence.

Great health book on veggies and fruits
I very much enjoyed this books format and nutritional advice. I've been doing something similar with my veggie focused meals, and it's nice to see studies that back up this way of thinking about food.

None

The Best of Nutritional Science
Would you listen to Eat to Live again? Why?
Yes, in fact I've listened to it a couple of times and physically read it 4 times! It is the absolute best summary of what is currently known in nutritional science today. The back of the book has over 1,000 scientific references so you can double check what the author says and see that it is indeed based on science, not just his opinion. I have personally gone back to the original research articles in several instances and especially in those areas which sounded the most different from previous info I had heard or read, and checked out the reliability of his statements. He proved to be true in every instance! In fact, in a couple of cases his explanation of what the study found was better than the abstract of the original article itself. This author has true intellectual and scientific integrity.
What other book might you compare Eat to Live to and why?
The China Study, as it's written by a Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry and is very solidly scientifically based, and comes to basically the same conclusions about what foods are best for humans to eat, and what should be avoided, and why.
What about Joel Fuhrman???s performance did you like?
He has a very friendly congenial sounding voice and is easy to relate to.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
When I first read this book (after checking out a few sources to be sure of its accuracy), I felt like jumping for joy! I had found the ultimate prize among nutritional books. Prior to reading this I was probably one of the leading authorities on foods, nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals and herbs and why they were good for you. After reading this my knowledge base was expanded Considerably, far more than I would have thought possible. This is the cat's meow of books on what to eat and why it's good for you, with clear explanations, and examples of people's health improving (not just losing weight) from many annoying chronic health conditions.
Any additional comments?
If you care about your health, and especially if you have any chronic health conditions (CAD, diabetes, arthritis, RA, sarcoidosis, etc.) read this book, at a minimum it will (if you follow the dietary and lifestyle changes it advocates) make you feel much better, and be able to function at a higher level!

Too Repetative for Audio Format
Any additional comments?
I believe what this book preaches, except it suffers from the fact that there is actually not a ton of things to say, but has been inflated to be long enough to warrant being a book. It is easier to take in paperback, because you can skip the repetitive parts, but with audio books, you cannot.
