About this listen

The massacre of 1982 told in full

Halloween night, 1982. Many people were brutally killed or simply vanished at the Blackwater Hotel—formerly Perron Manor. The events of that night have always remained a mystery.

Until now....

Ray and Rita Pearson, along with their daughter, Chloe, move into the hotel to help with its renovation and grand opening. All under the watchful eye of the mysterious owner, Marcus Blackwater.

But as they move closer to the opening date, things begin to happen in the hotel that are unexplainable. And Rita herself begins to change.

Unbeknownst to the family, there are other plans in place, and Marcus Blackwater has his own agenda—one started by his grandfather many years ago.

The story culminates in a horrific turn of events that changes everything you think you know about the house... and its inhabitants.

Devil's Door had an intriguing premise and some genuinely atmospheric moments, but I struggled to get into it at first. The pacing felt quite slow in the opening chapters, and it took a while before the story really grabbed me. Once things finally started moving, it definitely improved, and I found myself enjoying the plot and the tension a lot more.

I didn't read the physical book; I listened to it on Audible, and that probably affected my overall experience. The narrator is male, and unfortunately, his portrayal of the female characters pulled me out of the story repeatedly. The voices he used made the women sound slow, overly breathy, or just plain unintelligent, which didn't do the characters any favours. It was distracting and definitely not the best way to take in the book.

That said, I did like the creepy setting and the way the mystery unfolded. Once the pace picked up, the story became far more engaging, and the later chapters held my attention well. Overall, it was okay; not a favourite, but not a bad read either. If you’re curious about the series, I'd still recommend giving it a try, but maybe stick to a physical copy or ebook rather than the audio.

This is more of a prequel than a sequel to book one, it explains a lot of what happens when Chloe was a child. It also explains Sarah's odd behavior. I did not enjoy it as much as book one though, I think it would have been better to have read this one first.

Prequel to book one
