About this listen

Dear Leader contains astonishing new insights about North Korea which could only be revealed by someone working high up in the regime. It is also the gripping story of how a member of the inner circle of this enigmatic country became its most courageous, outspoken critic.

Jang Jin-sung held one of the most senior ranks in North Korea's propaganda machine, helping tighten the regime's grip over its people. Among his tasks were developing the founding myth of North Korea, posing undercover as a South Korean intellectual and writing epic poems in support of the dictator, Kim Jong-il.

Young and ambitious, his patriotic work secured him a bizarre audience with Kim Jong-il himself, thus granting him special status as one of the 'Admitted'. This meant special food provisions, a travel pass and immunity from prosecution and harm. He was privy to state secrets, including military and diplomatic policies, how the devastating 'Scrutiny' was effected, and the real position of one of the country's most powerful, elusive men, Im Tong-ok. Because he was praised by the Dear Leader himself, he had every reason to feel satisfied with his lot and safe.

Yet he could not ignore his conscience, or the disparity between his life and that of those he saw starving on the street. After breaking security rules, Jang Jin-sung, together with a close friend, was forced to flee for his life: away from lies and deceit, towards truth and freedom.

A wonderful tale of survival hope and freedom. When so much of what we have in the west is taken for granted this book reminds us that not everywhere has gained freedom or prosperity. The book is endearing sad but always full of hope. It has purpose.
From a historical point of view as well as being of political interest this book is fantastic even when you are not a student of North Korean affairs.

Incredible story

I listened to this book with great interest and emotion. It is a real, honest and candid account of a North Korean defector’s fight for freedom.
I found it difficult to understand some of the historic and political references about North Korea but that’s due to my own lack of knowledge. You won’t be disappointed.

I am slightly obsessed with the stories of North Korean defectors. Dear Leader offers a fascinating insight into the political workings and strategies from within the NK Workers Party which I have not encountered in other defection biographies. I really enjoyed this book, it was wonderfully descriptive, and thoughtfully written.

Fascinating story of defection from a part member

I wouldn't have gone for this except for the unanimous judgement of all the reviewers that this is an excellent book, one of the best. They are not wrong.

It's a totally gripping account of his escape from North Korea, mixed with high level insight into the oppressive horror and poverty of the regime. I couldn't stop listening.

It made me glad to have been born in the UK. We mustn't take freedom for granted. God knows what it's like there now they're installing 5G cameras on the border. This is a dystopic human tragedy unfolding from bad to worse and I feel so very sorry for the people of North Korea.

I have sometimes fallen into the trap of just casually believing the North Korean leadership are like cruel and childish morons, but this book has awoken me to the intelligence and cunning of Kim Jong-il and is making me look with fresh eyes at "Little Rocket Man".

Gripping, Astonishing, Chilling
