About this listen

DEADLY RITES

When Carver finds out that Rich Polaski, a man he served with in the SEALS, is on an NSA watch list, he goes to warn him out of a sense of duty.

He arrives in the small town of Bickham, Illinois, a spotless town with almost zero crime, no chain stores, and an aesthetic from a time long past.

That's because the local police run the town like it's their own little kingdom. They take what they want, and no one stops them.

Rich is their latest victim. They used civil forfeiture to take his home and fifty thousand dollars he'd been saving for surgery. But apparently, that wasn't enough. Carver finds out they also plan to take his life.

Carver's arrival stirs up the hornet's nest and puts him on a collision course with the local constabulary. It's a dangerous game, but that's nothing new to him. They're about to find out the hard way that the stakes just got higher.

And the next thing forfeited might be their lives.

I thought this was going to be a Reacher dupe but it’s more. Although the underlying premise is a Reacher like drifter confronting trouble as it unerringly finds him, I think Carver is a darker and maybe more defined character? The stories are fine - good enough to sustain interest and enjoyable.
However the star for me is the narrator. He’s one of the best I’ve listened to. Intelligent and sensitive to the written word. Occasionally the author repeats a word in a subsequent sentence but the narrator manages to use a different delivery so you barely notice. He moves the story along seamlessly.

Good story and superb narration

While I enjoyed this listen, I am increasingly irritated by the amount of repetition and extraneous detail: 'There was, there was, there was', 'the door, the door, the door', the fence, the fence, the fence', etc, leading me to believe a professional editor isn't involved. One should be! As ever, the narration is excellent. That guy can do any accent convincingly!

Another good story
