Although the story was interesting it was spoiled by the narrator. Some of the characters she voiced were dreadful especially the psychiatrist .

First, let me say that I’m a huge K.G. Reuss fan. I’ve binged her other series with gusto, so naturally I went into this YA series expecting to get completely sucked in. Instead… confusion is an understatement.
I have actually listened to Dead Silence twice because I kept thinking I must have missed something the first time. Nope. Still confused. 😂 And I’m a paranormal reader/listener, so it’s not like ghosts, supernatural weirdness, or complicated paranormal worlds are outside my wheelhouse.
But honestly, the paranormal confusion almost took a backseat to the main character’s entire life.
Our FMC is young, incredibly naïve, and stuck in a toxic high-school relationship that is so disturbing it feels like something that should eventually become an episode of a true-crime podcast. Then there are her parents, who are somehow even worse. One is neglectful, while the other is outright abusive and attempts to kill her. She also struggles with suicidal thoughts and attempts to end her life.
And I kept sitting there thinking… WHY IS THIS YA?! 😂
I’m all for dark stories, complicated characters, and heavy subject matter, but this felt like an absolutely wild amount of trauma to pile onto a teenage character while also trying to make sense of an already confusing paranormal storyline.
The frustrating part is that I really wanted to love this. It’s K.G. Reuss! I know she can create stories that completely consume me. But after two listens, I’m still trying to connect the dots and figure out what exactly I was supposed to take away from this one.
Maybe the bigger picture becomes clearer as the series continues, but after book one, I’m basically sitting here like:
“Okay… I listened to this TWICE. Can someone please explain what the hell is happening?” 😂
I’m definitely not giving up on K.G. Reuss because I’ve loved her other books, but this one was unfortunately a miss for me.
