This time we switch POVs and get Shadow’s perspective, which I actually thought might help. Maybe getting inside Shadow’s head would finally explain some of the things that left me scratching my head in book one.
Nope.
If anything, I’m now even more confused. 😂
And honestly, my biggest issue with this book is that it’s essentially the male POV of the same story. I almost wish this had just been written as a dual-POV book from the beginning. Getting Shadow’s perspective is interesting, but it doesn’t really feel like we’re getting a new story. We’re getting another perspective on the same one.
And unfortunately, that second perspective doesn’t solve the bigger problems.
The story is still incredibly convoluted, with paranormal elements, complicated relationships, secrets, mysterious connections, and a whole lot of things happening that seem like they should eventually come together and make sense. Except… they don’t. At least not for me.
I kept waiting for that magical moment where everything would finally click into place and I’d think, OH! THAT’S what this has all been about! Instead, I mostly found myself wondering if I was missing an entire audiobook somewhere. 😂
What makes it even more frustrating is that Shadow Song doesn't actually feel like a complete story on its own. It adds more characters, more world-building, more information, and more pieces to the overall puzzle, but the original story is still sitting there unfinished. We’ve basically added more puzzle pieces without actually putting the first puzzle together.
So, overall, I don’t feel like book two adds much to the actual progression of the original story. It expands the world and gives us Shadow’s POV, but the initial premise and the questions from book one are still largely stuck in the same place.
And that's frustrating because I really want to love this series. I’m a huge K.G. Reuss fan, and I’ve devoured her other series. I know she can create dark, addictive stories with characters I become completely invested in. But with this series, I feel like I’m constantly trying to assemble a puzzle when I’m not entirely sure what the picture on the box is supposed to look like.
At this point, I’ve accepted that maybe the problem isn’t that I’m not paying attention. Maybe Shadow Song is just determined to keep me in a permanent state of “Wait… what?” 😂
I’m still curious enough to continue, because apparently I enjoy torturing myself with unanswered questions. But after two books, I desperately need this story to actually start moving forward and, preferably, make some damn sense. 😂
