About this listen

A girl’s body is found in a dustbin. 'Dead Meat' is written on a note found with her.

The girl was part of a group of bullies from the local school. But DI Calladine recognises the MO of Craig Donnelly, a killer he thought he’d put away forever. And coincidentally Donnelly has just been released from prison. But when Detective Calladine charges in, he finds out that Donnelly has a watertight alibi and is under the protection of the local vicar, who thinks Donnelly is a changed man.

When another girl goes missing from the same group of friends, Calladine must look elsewhere for the killer and comes across a sinister online predator who was in touch with all the girls. DS Ruth Bayliss is back from maternity leave, but even her skills and common sense can’t crack the case.

In a race against time, they must stop the killer, someone who may even be close to home, before he continues his vicious killing spree.

I have enjoyed the Calladine & Baylis books so far but I get irked by protagonists calling police officers ‘copper’ and saying ‘do one’ when they want someone to leave. It’s all rather 1970’s The Sweeny and detracts from the narrative. I agree with other reviewers that some of the murder scenes are rather overly graphic but on the whole the books are good and the narrator does a good job with the voices .

Still good……….but

I have loved the changing voice for all the characters, throughout this series, So believable! Jonathan is fantastic at bringing the characters to life. I dislike the length of the books. It would be great to listen for a few hours more.

A good story and full of tension. The description of cruelty prior to the deaths I found too much. Apart from the torture scenes I liked the book and it was well told.

In my opinion this is the weakest of the bunch, still good by any measure but a bit of a letdown after the previous 5. JK however does his usual brilliant performance

Good not great

Well written tale with plenty of twists. Jonathan Keeble is an excellent reader and gives each character its own voice without sounding stretched. Very good thanks

pacey thriller
