I enjoyed this origin story, it's actually the first 2 books included in this title, I thought it was finished but was happy that book 2 started straight after.
if you've listened to any of Scotts other works, also read by Mark, you'll be right at home.

I'm excited to see where it goes next.

Excellent start to a promising series

What seemed like a promising plot degraded quickly into a story of violence that seemed to have no meaning or end. I am probably not in the target audience, and others may have more fun reading this long winded soldier’s tale…

As this is a two-book audiobook, I've written two separate reviews below:

Conscript is the first book in the Conscript Universe series, written by Scott Bartlett. We follow Po Abbato, a young man stuck with his family in a mining colony on the asteroid Psyche, a giant metal rich asteroid, about three times farther away from the Sun than is Earth. Po’s father is in prison, his mother has given up on life, and his older brother is not exactly the prefect role model either. But Po still does his best to contribute to the family, and especially to take care of his younger brother and sister.

Psyche, being so far from Earth, is home to a large number of shady types, and everything that comes with them. Po sees his chance to one-up some of these individuals, and score a large sum of money, so he can give his family a better life. Unfortunately, this does not go as planned, and Po ends up being conscripted. Safe to say, Po’s decisions results in him having the hardest time of his life as a marine in the army, but at the same time, he is also experiencing some mysterious events that can’t be easily explained.

The book was well written and had a good pace, and was supported by great characterisations and action moments, with very nice visual descriptions to put you at the side of Po. Throughout most of the book you are eager to find out what Po’s going to experience then, and what can explain some of the events that happens to him. There’s a great supporting character gallery, and a plot that poses enough questions for you to want to keep going. Po’s experiencing a lot of hardships that makes you root for him, despite some of them not being too well thought out, and he experiences quite a bit of character growth.

The book ends with a great setup for the sequel, after aliens comes into the picture.

I listened to the audiobook as narrated by Mark Boyett, Mr. Bartletts usual go-to narrator, and I was not dissatisfied at all. He provides great narration and enthusiasm, and made the audiobook a joy to listen to.

Overall, if you are into military science fiction, and require both a proper plot and character development, look no further, this is for you.

I received this audiobook for free from the author. I have no affiliation with the author, the narrator, the publisher, or their pets (Although I am sure the latter are quite nice!).

Rifleman is the second book in the Conscript Universe series, written by Scott Bartlett. It continues directly after the first book, Conscript, and we now follow Po Abbato and his fellow marines on Earths moon. They are still recovering from the sudden attack on their training station, Cycler 3, and are now directly involved in the search for terrorists and who is responsible attack. The moon is known to habor some, but as we follow Po, it turns out that the situation is more dire than first expected.

I did not feel the second book was as strong as the first one. While still well written and with great characters, the overall plot wasn’t as complex, and I didn’t feel the various plotlines were as well developed.
In the first book we hear about Pos problems with his family, how he is having trouble fitting in with the other marines, how he suddenly discovers an alien that can hack into his visor, with his training, and we deal with the alien attack. Apart for the latter plotline, everything else didn’t progress very much. Po complains a lot about his family, but the story doesn’t really progress much, and apart from his father getting out of jail, nothing else develops. His problems with his fellow marines is no longer an issue at all, and the entire Zanth plotline is also at a standstill. There’s a bit of character development for Poe in that he makes certain decisions with regards to his marine promotional status that doesn’t work out well, but that is also all, and in the end they don’t have much of an effect anyway.
We spend a lot of time on the Moon, and here we discover certain things that sets up for the marines to move to Nibiru instead. While interesting, in the end it didn’t really have much of an effect on the overall storyline. Based on the first book we were already expecting Po to end up on Nibiru, so the whole Earth Moon plot seems more like a detour speed bump in the overarching plot. The overall story does pick significantly up in the latter part, and sets up for a lot more story development in book three.

Mark Boyett did as wonderful narration as he did with the first book, so that was a joy.

If you enjoyed book one, chances are you’ll enjoy this one too, but don’t expect as captivating a story as in the previous book.

Man this poor guy has an uphill battle through the entire book. Betrayal, friendship, and loss. Looking forward to the next book.

A lot of luck isn't always great.

like other reviews have pointed out you get two books with this. Full of interesting concepts that are outside the norm for the genre.

the conspiracy still has me guessing and I am looking forward to the next book to see what answers Scott has for us.

our narrator is great. easily letting me lose myself as Poe moves from one challenge to the next.
