Story
For years now, Fern Britton has been widely loved as the presenter of Ready Steady Cook, and, more recently, co-presenter of This Morning with Philip Schofield. Never one to shy away from a good laugh or cry on national TV, she has none-the-less never talked about herself to the public, preferring to keep her private life private. Her warmth and humour, empathy and compassion, have made her feel like a best friend to millions on a daily basis, but no one knows the woman behind the sparkling smile.

All Marnie wants is somewhere to call home. Mourning lost years spent in a marriage that has finally come to an end, she needs a fresh start and time to heal. For Sam Lovell, organising the summer festival in her hometown is one of the highlights of her year. It’s not always smooth sailing, but she loves to see Porthmellow’s harbour packed with happy visitors and being on the committee has provided a much-needed distraction from the drama in her family life (and the distinct lack of it in her love life). When their star guest pulls out with only a few weeks to go, everyone’s delighted when a London chef who grew up locally steps in at the last minute.

Ghastly narration.
The story, which follows on from The Postcard, is okay. Lacks a little in depth and interest but generally is fine.
But oh my! The narration is appallingly bad. So much so that on a number of occasions I have been tempted to give up on it. I became fond of the characters as narrated in The Postcard but can't bear them now. Kit has suddenly become a faux Cornish country bumpkin when the due diligence of some background research would have lead the narrator to see that he did not originate from Cornwall and had, in fact, only recently arrived. Regional accents should be left well alone unless the narrator can do them well and this one can't. At all.
Ella is whiny and pathetic and Henry...ugh. In fact, each and every character has been given a whining tone that irritates and alienates the listener.
I wish that the same narrator had been used for this book as for The Postcard if only so that continuity could be maintained.

Does not sit well in 2019
This does not have the same feel of the other books. The female characters have very weak, trembly voices and are always sighing and fainting, leaving the unreasonable behaviour of the male characters completely unchecked. There are a few slightly uncomfortable moments of stereotyping that I wasn’t sure about either. I’m not some bra burning feminist - far from it - but I became frustrated at how it took a man to arrive on the scene to tackle the main male character’s nasty behaviour, whilst sensible intelligent women were seemingly paralysed by his (non existent) charms. Come on - we can do better in the present day!

Disappointing narration
The character voices have changed from the previous book. Kit has been given an accent, probably Cornish, but in the last book he relocated from the South East. Ella sounds less relatable and likeable then the previous book. I have been considering giving up on the book but the story is very good so I’ve tried to ignore the strange accents.
