About this listen

When young John Vincent died, the outward respectability of the Cornwall household was undermined. Strangers pried, asked too many questions and pointed accusing fingers at Charlotte - herself eager to escape from the oppressive atmosphere of her father's home.

She fled deep into the countryside and there taught at a school run by the untrusting and untrustworthy Mrs Armitage, who was prepared to keep quiet about Charlotte's past - but only up to a point. When the events come to be recreated, some questions naturally arise. Had Charlotte been responsible for the death of the little pupil she loved? And has that crime been repeated? In darker moments, even Charlotte herself cannot be sure.

It took time to get into the book , but once I had I enjoyed it . Charlotte thinks she has killed someone whilst she was sleep walking , there is no proof . She moves away and lives in a girls school , she has a new start in life , no one knows who she is and about her past , she is able to enjoy her life and start again . But one person uses her past to blame her for the death of a child . Charlotte is not the person who is responsible for the child dying .

Based initially on the notorious Victorian trial of Constance Kent 'Charlotte' offers a credible alternative version of events leading to the murder of the protagonist's young brother, Vincent.
Carefully crafted, and convincingly constructed 'Charlotte' is a 'must-read' for all fans of Nora Lofts, and for all those who like virtue to be rewarded.

Faithful rendering of an old favourite

The only thing that I didn’t like was the narrator’s attempts at male voices ( all gruff) and children’s voices ( too squeaky). Everything else was fine.
