About this listen

BTB at her superb best. A sweeping saga set around the aristocratic Ingham family of Cavendon Hall and the Swanns who serve them, set on the eve of World War 1.

Two entwined families: the aristocratic Inghams and the Swanns who serve them

One stately home: Cavendon Hall, a grand imposing house nestled in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales

A society beauty: Lady Daphne Ingham is the most beautiful of the Earl’s daugthers. Being presented at Court and then a glittering marriage is her destiny.

But in the summer of 1913, a devastating event changes her future forever, and puts the House of Ingham at risk. Life as the families of Cavendon Hall know it – Royal Ascot, supper dances, grouse season feasts – is about to alter beyond recognition as the storm clouds of war gather.

‘A stately home, a dangerous secret and two families whose fates have been intertwined for generations…a gripping period piece set on the brink of the Great War. Exquisite escapism of the highest order’ The Lady

‘Few novelists are as consummate as Barbara Taylor Bradford at keeping the reader turning the page. She is one of the world’s best at spinning yarns’

I loved this book. The characters were perfectly balanced...most memorable for me was The Great War. chapters...anticipating who was going to return and who may not. i thought the narrator was spectacular. I must read the sequel asap....Just hooked on period dramas with a bit of history thrown in....So enjoyable. cannot go far wrong with BTB....

If you could sum up Cavendon Hall in three words, what would they be?

Yorkshire, comforting, familiar.

Would you be willing to try another one of Anna Bentinck’s performances?

Not if there is a Yorkshire accent involved

Any additional comments?

Why on earth was this narrator selected to read a book which involves Yorkshire accents? The voice she uses for the young gypsy girl Genevra makes her sound more like a 60 year old man. I am Yorkshire born and bred and her supposed local accents are dire. Am trying my best to enjoy this audio book but rather wish I had bought the book itself and I am seriously considering returning the audio book, solely due to the narration.

Not far in but narrator not suited to this book.
