There is a certain pattern to most Bony books. It's a crime that has gone unsolved. He has to go undercover. There is a beautiful young rancher's daughter whose charms get in the way of Bony's mission. There will be tracking through desolate landscapes. There will be confrontations with aboriginals. And Bony will be dismissed from the police service at least once then welcomed back with open arms when he triumphs. Yet the stories are so well told and varied despite all this that they are compelling to listen to. Arthur Upfield was one helluva writer.
