Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The highly anticipated sequel to 12 Rules for Life, which has sold over five million copies around the world.

In 12 Rules for Life, acclaimed public thinker and clinical psychologist Jordan B. Peterson offered an antidote to the chaos in our lives: eternal truths applied to modern anxieties. His insights have helped millions of people and resonated powerfully around the world.

Now in this long-awaited sequel, Peterson goes further, showing that part of life's meaning comes from reaching out into the domain beyond what we know and adapting to an ever-transforming world. While an excess of chaos threatens us with uncertainty, an excess of order leads to a lack of curiosity and creative vitality. Beyond Order therefore calls on us to balance the two fundamental principles of reality - order and chaos - and reveals the profound meaning that can be found on the path that divides them.

In times of instability and suffering, Peterson reminds us that there are sources of strength on which we can all draw: insights borrowed from psychology, philosophy and humanity's greatest myths and stories. Drawing on the hard-won truths of ancient wisdom, as well as deeply personal lessons from his own life and clinical practice, Peterson offers 12 new principles to guide listeners towards a more courageous, truthful and meaningful life.

Too much religion for me

I enjoyed the first book for the most part as it had some intriguing insights into society, politics, psychology, and anthropology. However, I found this sequel to be more focused towards self-help than its predecessor (which is fine if that is to your taste, though I'm personally not very keen on the genre). Nevertheless, there were some interesting ideas and anecdotes, and I did enjoy listening to much of the book.

My biggest issue with the book, however, was the recurring religious content within it. While I admittedly have a particular aversion to religion, I can nevertheless appreciate the symbolism and storytelling underpinning historical myths. But parts of this book went beyond that scope and acclaimed religion and God and their place in society. I felt this almost undermined the more logically reasoned and scientific parts of the book (of which there were fewer than in its predecessor).

In short, if you enjoyed the first book, I expect you will likely enjoy much of this one too, but be warned it is more self-help oriented and contains more religious content and less political commentary.

Amazing, Life Changing

Just got through the second Rule and even with me having high expectations, this book has not disappointed me. This is a perfect sequel to the previous book and is just as eye-opening and engaging as that was. Jordan is one of the greatest intellectuals of our lifetime and is an absolute privilege to be able to listen/read more of his work. Life has no happy ending, but this book opens your eyes to finding positives and strength in the inevitable chaos of our existence at a personal level. I have nothing but respect for this great man.

A significant book

You should listen to it and you should read it, preferably at the same time so you can remember those wise words. These are deep, profound and universally applicable wisdom, regardless your ethnicity, age and social background. These help me become a fulfilled human being and they are like a mental foundation that is cemented in my mind.

Wonderful.

You don't have to worshipfully hang by JBP's every word as some do, nor believe him to be evil incarnate as do others. Simply take the man for what he is; earnest, thoughtful, well-informed well-intentioned, and a truly great communicator. Beyond Order. Perhaps beyond polarisation. A wonderful read.

deeply personally

just as good as the first one. the most appealing part is for me that he has so much personal experience and that he is applying his own advice to his own world. no hypocrisy. just truthful life lesson on how to be a better person. some parts hit hard.

Not disappointed. Really enjoyed this listen.

I feel as if Jordan Peterson is misunderstood by many. On the face of it his message seems harsh and perhaps macho but if you take the time to really listen you’ll realise that he’s just trying to make the best of things the way we all should. Many of us do and many of us appreciate a helping hand when it’s offered. Call me naive but I think he cares and I think he’s been wrestling with things for most of his life. Just my opinion but I am, after a lot of reading and listening to lots of different people, a big fan. This is another great book brilliantly narrated

Truly motivational and thought provoking

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The narrative voice switches between storyteller, clinical psychologist and philosophical analyst giving a grounded, realistic and personal interpretation of each rule. I honestly think 'Beyond Order' is a more mature book than the first volume (12 rules for life), something which Dr. Peterson has endeavoured to achieve and in my mind has accomplished. The book resonated greatly with me and I can't seem to stop asking myself questions about my own life, so much so, that I started listening to some of the chapters again in an effort to distill the knowledge even further. I highly recommend for those wondering if they should pick it up where I should mention that the first volume is not a prerequisite, but it is a great addition nonetheless.

Engaging

Never dissapoints, always invoking deep thought to the "mundane".
Makes one take their own behaviors, ideas, and perceptions more seriously or atleast unravels them.
Thank you

One of the rare times a sequel does not disappoint

I was worried that I would not like the 2nd installment given the precedent set by JP.
I can't say it's better, however, I can't say it's worse. It's just great in its own way like the other two books.

JP does it again

Remarkably even while functioning at below optimal Jeordan Peterson still manages to deliver clear, concise and in-depth breakdown of phycological wisdom in a fashion akin to the legend himself. I would definitely recommend.

took me a week to listen to it because there was so much I had to think about and understand carefully. no doubt will be giving this book another listen in the future. glad the author read it himself despite the challenges he was facing.

better than 12 rules for life

if the previous book was called 12 rules, this should be called 12 principles. It has more nuance, it says mainly that you have to apply the spirit of the law, not the letter. And only those who integrated the spirit of the law can broke the letter
