Summary

The isle of Aure is an odd place. Half is buried under a perilous “cursed wood”, the other half is speckled with the ancient remains of a lost civilization. Aure’s newest inhabitants have made their homes on top of those ruins. Myths and legends abound. Stories about "the fae” are widespread, but never taken seriously. Soon, though, everything is about to change....

When 12-year-old Merisande happens upon a young fae prince, he gives her a summoning stone she can use to call him if she’s ever in need of help.

Nine years later, Merisande is at a crossroads when her younger brother releases a bull from its pen and it damages the neighboring lord’s flock. The lord offers to set aside the damages if she’ll marry his son, a knight named Sir Avry.

Despite Avry's deep love for Merisande, she despises him. Years ago, he helped give her brother a severe beating. The memory of that violence has stayed with her, and she decides it’s best to flee. Using the stone, she summons Gandel and begs him to take her to his land, Thorsault.

But the fae kingdom turns out to be a dreadful place. The only humans living there are mute, sickly slaves who labor all day for their fae masters. Though Merisande is under the protection of Prince Gandel, she does not feel safe.

Then, by chance, she encounters Sir Avry, who has followed her into the kingdom. Avry had nothing to do with the letter his father sent and refuses to marry a woman against her will. Merisande realizes that she may have prejudged him. But this problem is greatly overshadowed by much bigger ones: Gandel is unable persuade his father to free Avry, and the slaves are dying from a terrible plague. With no one to replace them, the fae king prepares to harvest more, and his target is none other than Merisande and Avry’s own people. Can they escape and warn their country before the unimaginable happens?

relaxed paced story

this story took me longer than normal. there was alot of story to listen to. and I kept having to rewind it because my attention kept drifting. there was not really anything to keep my focus on the story, especially the first 8 chapters . it is a great story, well thought of. and I really did enjoy it, but for me it took a bit to long to grip my attention. I expected something different

Great story and narration overall.

I really loved this and can't wait to jump into the second book. It's easy to visualize the world and it's wonders, and the history and lore it builds is interesting and suspenseful. I like how a lot of things come full circle in it, little things mentioned early on get more attention later on and you have that "oh, that's why they said/did that!". I love stuff like that. (On that note, the only thing I found weird is how much of the story is explained in the summary. It kinda goes over everything but the last hour, just seems to give a little too much detail, but that's just my opinion. Luckily I had only seen a summary on Facebook that had been a lot more vague, and I think I enjoyed it better that way than if I'd seen the audible summary.) The narration was also great, if a bit confusing at a few times. Sometimes when characters where talking, especially repeating back questions, it was a bit hard to follow. The voices that the narrator uses don't sound very different so it's harder to tell who's talking by just the voice. The whispering was great though, and I loved it. I received a free review copy of this book.

Breath Taking

A truly beautiful story. So well crafted it really pulls you in. It felt reminiscent of Lud-in-the-Mist. Definitely "unputdownable".

Fantasy with unusual faeries

I’m hooked on stories featuring faeries right now and this book has an interesting take on them. These are not magical wonderful faeries they are vicious and I like it! Our MC meets a young faerie prince and he becomes indebted to her. Years later when she thinks she is being forced to marry a wealthy neighbor she flees with the faerie prince to a nearby kingdom and finds that there is no fairy tale ending. This is a creative story that is beautifully written. I can’t wait to listen to book 2!

Pulls you in this story

This fantasy story is simplistic which helps you visualise everything in your head. The Characters are all stonger than they thought and the trials of life only make them stronger to over come whats in front of them. a younge girls life (merisande) is totally changed from start to finish all because of a misunderstanding to a note sent to her father. i cant wait to read the next installment.

Emotional and engaging

I thought this book was great. There were parts when I thought the prose was very beautiful and I love the fey element to the story. With all the grimdark and high pressure action based fantasy going around these days, it was refreshing to listen to a story that didn't need to be over the top to be good.

Loved it!!

Beneath the roots was amazing the narrator's voice just like any other audio book takes a moment to make sense of. I loved how detailed and movie like the story was I loved the unique twist on fair folk I loved the dark woods what I disliked most about the book was that the main character wasn't the most relatable but because of the way the story is told it didn't bother me after I was fully absorbed into the story! I can't wait to get to the sequel!!

Beneath the Roots

The story moved along at a good pace not rushed, although I would have liked them to stay longer in the Fae land of Thorsault, as I found it very captivating.

Enchanting

This book was captivating. My favorite theme was the love story. W.K. Greyling has woven a beautiful love story that made my heart soar. A love story that was not shallow or contrived. In that, it was so refreshing. I am eager for the next book. I want to know more about the hidden Fae Kingdom and their ultimate plan. I want to know about the lost civilization and what brought its demise. Are the inhabitants on the Isle of Aure going to be able to survive what seems like an imminent attack? What caused the creation of the cursed woods? What is the story behind the White and the red deer? Did the noble Fae, Gandel, survive? Will Merisande see him again? Is there any hope for the slaves of the Fae? Will the plague spread? Here is a fantasy I can recommend wholeheartedly to the young and old. It is without bad language and is without sex. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request, and have voluntarily left this review. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

An original and fun fast paced novel

This story is the perfect mix of clear detail and plot speed so, while it creates beautiful imagery in your mind, it moves fast enough to keep you interested. It's an unusual story and it's fun and exciting. The characters are well developed and stay true to their personalities. The narrator's voice is pleasant and peaceful to listen to. I highly recommend this book! Looking forward to more from W.K. Greyling!

Enjoyable and original

This review is for both books in this series as I listened to/ read them back to back. I initially started with the audio version of Beneath The Roots but just couldn’t get into it - there’s nothing wrong with Krista Nicely’s narration as such, it just starts rather slowly and my attention kept wandering. I then switched to the ebook and got quickly drawn into the story - once that had happened I could alternate between reading and listening and enjoyed both. The second volume is narrated by Tim H. Dixon who I found easy to listen to right from the start - by then I was invested in the characters of course and wanted to see what was going to happen to them. The story itself is at the darker end of the fairy-tale spectrum (think Grimm rather than Disney), there’s plenty of original elements in both the plot and world building, the characters are layered and interesting and largely manage to avoid the typical fantasy stereotypes and tropes (a few of those we all want of course!) and the whole thing culminated in a satisfying ending. Great stuff!

Enchanting

This was a very enjoyable story. Like all fantasy books, it took a bit to acclimate to the world; however, the author managed to create a world that was interesting without being overly complicated. The main characters were likable and flawed in a relatable way. The narrator’s tone and pacing matched the story well, but I wish that there was more variation in her voice when she voices different characters. Overall, I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next book!
