A DARK FANTASY CLASSIC: 18 seductive stories inspired by fairy tales, mythology, and the Arabian Nights, starring Azhrarn, Prince of Demons—perfect for those looking for an alternative to Neil Gaiman’s Sandman.
“Storytelling at its best and fantasy in its purest and strongest essence.”—SFSite
Rediscover master fantasist and World Fantasy Award winner Tanith Lee’s classic dark fantasy series, Tales from the Flat Earth, where demons and gods grant wonders and wreak havoc. Visit the Upperearth, where dwell the gods; the Underearth, the realm of nightmarish demons; the Innerearth, domain of the dead; and the Flat Earth itself, the home of mortals.
Supreme amongst them all is the demon god Azhrarn, Night’s Master, whose deadly whims could change the lives of those in the Flat Earth. Azhrarn holds in his heart a mystery which could alter the very existence of the Flat Earth forever.
Nominated for the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel, and the inspiration for Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, the first Flat Earth epic fantasy introduces a fascinating world reminiscent of the Arabian Nights.

'Go nowhere on a horse that fades...'
𝕹𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙'𝖘 𝕸𝖆𝖘𝖙𝖊𝖗, by 𝕿𝖆𝖓𝖎𝖙𝖍 𝕷𝖊𝖊 is a 𝕲𝖔𝖙𝖍𝖎𝖈 𝕹𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙 𝕱𝖆𝖓𝖙𝖆𝖘𝖞 constituting various fairytale retellings akin to Arabian Nights. It is Book One in the 𝕿𝖆𝖑𝖊𝖘 𝕱𝖗𝖔𝖒 𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝕱𝖑𝖆𝖙 𝕰𝖆𝖗𝖙𝖍 chronicles, a luxuriant gothic dream fantasy set on a flat plane (I.E. Discworld) which has upper, inner, and under echelons of existence inhabited by ambitious Mortals, sensual Demons, and dismissive Gods.
Our protagonist / antagonist is 𝕬𝖟𝖍𝖗𝖆𝖗𝖓, 𝕹𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙'𝖘 𝕸𝖆𝖘𝖙𝖊𝖗. He is the Lord of Darkness, Prince of Demons, and Ruler of Druhim Vanashta, the City of Underearth (wherein dwell Demonkind). 𝕬𝖟𝖍𝖗𝖆𝖗𝖓 is a beautiful being woven of night. With hair of blue-black fire, black eyes, and white skin. He commonly takes on the form of a black eagle to soar the skies of the Flat Earth, muddling in mortal affairs.
𝕬𝖟𝖍𝖗𝖆𝖗𝖓 is the crux of the novel, appearing in each standalone story. Through his meddling we experience tales of tragedy, greed, young love, all of which are encapsulated in a deeply dark Gothic Fantasy.
Tanith Lee is carefully carving out her title as my favourite author of all time. Her prose is bejewelled, encrusted with glittering textures, both rich and ornate. Her stylized language is flowery and poetic. It should be noted that this is, to it's core, a DARK FANTASY. Expect uncomfortable scenes. Expect intimate relationships between Demon Dwarfs (Drin) and Giant Spiders. Expect every possible trigger warning you can think of, but lacquered in gilt language.
