About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A searingly honest memoir from Dexys’ iconic frontman, one of the great mavericks and creative geniuses of British music.

At home, the prayerful eight-year-old altar boy was planning to attend college to train to be a priest. Elsewhere, he was thieving, lying, swearing, fighting and rarely out of trouble.

In this astonishing memoir, Kevin takes us from the juvenile courts of his troubled teenage years to the early days of the New Romantic scene in the late ’70s. An unwavering passion for music and highly tuned sense of fashion and style ignited an unstoppable drive within him, compelling him down a path that led to his huge chart successes with Dexys Midnight Runners in the early 1980s. However, despite being celebrated as a creative genius, inner turmoil was never far away, and a terrifying series of self-sabotaging events were to follow – including a serious cocaine addiction – leaving him in the wilderness in the 1990s, bankrupt, living in a bedsit, on the dole.

Always resilient in the face of adversity, after a massive upheaval Kevin found his way back. He charts his return journey, from shocking audiences with his pioneering embrace of gender fluidity with My Beauty, right through to Dexys’ triumphant appearance at Glastonbury in 2024.

Vividly detailed, and with a truly rare degree of self-insight, this is Kevin's own, deeply personal account of an extraordinary life, raw and unvarnished. A remarkable memoir, as compelling and original as you would expect from one of the pioneering icons of music history.

Very enjoyable and entertaining listen. And hindsight is a great thing. But on several occasions you are screaming NO and you want to give Kevin a slap. But you can't help but like him

Frustrating

All Audio Biography's should be like this Brilliantly Brutal Frank and Bluntly Honest Kevin Rowland brings it to life with his reading of the book. I would say this is the best Audio book i have listen to full stop and i have never done a review before but this is just so good i had to write something. Thanks for the insight from a man who has lived a life of amazing highs and lows.

Brilliant Honest Raw kevin Roland is Exceptional

Kevin Rowland is a musical genius, he is our Brian Wilson. This memoir details his rollercoaster life with all the highs and the lows. It is incredibly honest, funny, heartfelt and moving. I came away feeling like I really got to know him and the honesty makes it so good. I also was left with an impression of an artist who has cared deeply about doing what he is doing through his whole creative life, never compromising or taking the easy way out, even if holding the right position damaged his fortunes. Yet that is why he is the most distinctive songwriter and singer of the last few decades, still making brilliant new music that doesn’t dwell on the past. Kevin, I salute you!!

The best music memoir I’ve ever heard

This is a painful but compelling listen - if there is an overall pattern behind behind the chapters it is “I knew I was doing the wrong thing but something made me do it anyway” - from compulsive petty theft as a child, to blowing a Stella musical career, to getting hooked on cocaine - not to mention the innumerable instances of treating girlfriends, family and associates extremely selfishly and badly. However, it is all owned up to in a way that shows great self-awareness and remorse, and by the end we get the picture of a reformed and repentant sinner finally finding peace with himself after this cathartic and self-lacerating inner-exploration through his painful past. There are some omissions if you are a Dexys fan - for instance, he seems so crushed by the commercial failure of the Don’t Stand Me Down album in 1985 that he doesn’t even seem to remember the big hit Dexys had with the Because of You single in 1986 - because it’s not even mentioned?! Rowland is a wonderful narrator to listen to - he even wells up and fights against crying when recounting the death of his father - with whom he always had a strained relationship. This book completely redefines what a memoir should be. I felt emotionally punch drunk just listening to his life story - just imagine actually living it!

Regrets? Far more than a few! Confessional in the extreme - reveals the self-torture behind the public image

A raw tale of his life with no stone left unturned. At the end you are pleased he has made it to this point.

The highs and the lows, brilliantly told.
