About this listen

Shortlisted for Best Audiobook: Science Fiction & Fantasy at the Speakies British Audio Awards 2025.

Maureen O’Brien reads this thrilling adventure for the First Doctor, Steven and Vicki as they once again face the Daleks.

On a radioactive moon on the outskirts of the Fourth Sector, the occupants of a besieged power station try desperately to hold the Daleks at bay. To this end they have apprehended a saboteur, spy, and traitor to the human race. His name is Steven Taylor. When the Doctor, Vicki and Steven first landed on the station, they little suspected the chain of events that would lead to Steven’s arrest. Now he must convince a young nurse, Chayla, and the station’s brutal Security Chief, Finn, that his intentions are honourable. But with every second wasted, the Daleks are gaining ground. With the Doctor and Vicki seemingly powerless in the TARDIS, Steven must prove once and for all that he is not an agent of the Daleks. Can anything be done to prevent the Doctor’s old enemies totally exterminating everyone on the station?

Maureen O’Brien, who played Vicki in the BBC TV series, reads this brand new story from Steve Lyons, whilst Nicholas Briggs supplies the authentic voices of the Daleks.

Fantastic Story!

When the mysterious Alien known only as Doctor Who and his companions arrive on a Space Station under attack, Steven Taylor inadvertently alteres history and prevents the Station from being taken by the Daleks. To right his wrong he must sabotage the Station and unwittingly become an Agent of the Daleks.

1 hour and a bit is a disappointing length for a full price adventure, but it was fun, expanded on the character of Steven Taylor, and his relationship with the Doctor somewhat, and played with the consequences of time travel. I love it when the Daleks are cunning, and whilst there were shades of that here, it wasn’t a classic Dalek story. This would have been a fun 2 parter back in the 60s, perhaps as a prelude to The Dalek Masterplan. Great narration by Maureen O’Brien, going the whole hog with her interpretations of Hartnell and Purves characters. Nick Briggs is always great value as the Daleks, but different Dalek voices and interactions would have elevated this story.

Great little story, could have been longer
