Paige Mahoney has escaped the secret prison city of Oxford. Now a fugitive in London, she nurtures a new taste for revolution.

Oxford may be behind her, but the Republic of Scion is undefeated. As Scion turns its all-seeing eye on Paige, she is forced to return to Jaxon Hall, her charismatic and brutal employer, to keep her foothold in the underworld.

But Paige will bow to only one now, and not even Jaxon will stop her exposing the corruption in the syndicate. As she plots to with the fabled Rose Crown, both sides of an ancient conflict seek her talents for themselves.©2024 Samantha Shannon-Jones (P)2022 Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Action & Adventure Dark Fantasy Dystopian Fantasy Science Fiction Psychic England

Critic reviews

There is no question over whether or not you should pick up The Mime Order. It is a MUST.
The novels are hugely imaginative
A trailblazer … The way Shannon’s characters shift, backstab and fall are as fascinating as the twists and turns of the plot
The Mime Order … is, if anything, more accomplished and imaginative than The Bone Season… I’m left wondering where Paige and Shannon will go next … Wherever she does go, I will follow
Shannon throws you into this rich, grimy near-future world
A riveting page-turner
Gripping, edge-of-the-seat plotting ... Fabulous
Goes hell-for-leather, all poltergeists and grisly murders and pitched battles in the catacombs of Camden

I was gripped by this series because I really enjoyed the unique magic system and the sheer variety of gifts that it produced. This book I liked more than the first because of how well written the high stakes situations were crafted. The delicate balance in power dynamics, lies, and alliances kept me engrossed and the end of the book had my heart pounding. The romance side of things is a bit lacking for me, I just don’t feel the tension between them the way I should but it’s better in this area than book 1. The performance for the audiobook was outstanding with very difficult voices done incredibly well!

High stakes written well. Couldn’t stop listening, had to find out what happened

Absolutely loving this voice actor genuinely the best I’ve ever heard. Brilliant story made even more so by the narrator.

Amazing voice actor

This second book in the series picks straight up from the events in the opening book. Paige is back in London and facing difficult choices as she navigates the underworld, the politics within the syndicate and slowly uncovering bitter truths.
I enjoyed seeing how this feisty protagonist grows and develops, learning more about her powers and asserting herself with her peers and mentors.
It felt a little long in places and the revelations weren't particularly mind blowing but still plenty to keep me hooked into this series.

Enjoyable sequel, excellent narration
