About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

In this epic and seductive gothic fantasy, a vampire escapes the thrall of Dracula and embarks on her own search for self-discovery and true love, from the No. 1 New York Times bestselling author of Hide.

Her name was written in the pages of someone else's story: Lucy Westenra was one of Dracula's first victims.

But her death was only the beginning. Lucy rose from the grave a vampire, and has spent her immortal life trying to escape from Dracula's clutches - and trying to discover who she really is and what she truly wants.

Her undead life takes an unexpected turn when, in twenty-first-century London, she meets another woman who is also yearning to break free from her past. Iris’s family has built a health empire based on a sinister secret, and they’ll do anything to stay in power.

Lucy has long believed she would never love again. But she finds herself compelled by the charming Iris, while Iris is mesmerised by the confident and glamorous Lucy. But their intense connection and blossoming love is threatened by forces from without. Iris's mother won't let go of her without a fight, and Lucy's past still has fangs: Dracula is on the prowl again.

Lucy Westenra has been a tragically murdered teen, a lonesome adventurer, and a fearsome hunter, but happiness always eluded her. Can she find the strength to destroy Dracula once and for all, or will her heart once again be her undoing?

Dracula changed her. Love will transform her.

Critic reviews

Smart, sizzling, and sensuous, this descent into the long years of Lucy's unlife breathes new life into the Dracula mythos. Suitable for both newcomers and longtime fans of Bram Stoker, Lucy Undying beautifully depicts the transformative power of love and the many forms that monsters take.
Brimming with White’s signature wit and razor-sharp prose, Lucy Undying is a gothic masterpiece, playfully paying homage to one of Bram Stoker’s most maligned characters and letting her shine for the heroine she is. I absolutely adored everything about this book.
Simply stunning. I couldn't put this dark and lush and poignant story down.
I've been a Kierstan White fan since her first book, and this is a career-defining book if I've ever read one. This vampire novel has teeth, and a bloody, beating heart that will leave you thinking of it long after you've finished the last page. An utterly gorgeous tale of life, love, and death.
A mesmerizing saga. Lucy Undying claws out of the familiar tale and gives voice to a gorgeous, heart-wrenching twist in the narrative. Kiersten White excels at combining the dazzling with the dark.
The best retelling of Bram Stoker’s Dracula I’ve read, featuring its most underrated character. A gorgeous tapestry of interconnected stories layered atop one another; add in heartbreak and Lucy’s absolute badassery, and serve cold, like the best revenge often is.
A hypnotic and razor-sharp reimagining of the quintessential vampire story, seen through Lucy’s alluring, immortal eyes. White has crafted a gothic-tinged tale as deep and dark as grave dirt and as lush as spilled blood.

Dracula fans - DO NOT READ.

Should have been titled: The Character Assassination of Mina Murray.

I'm so disappointed. So frustrated. This book had so much potential, I was so excited to read it. And I can't even say I hated it, because there was a lot of interesting stuff in here, but the writer just continued to make these baffling characterisation choices. I almost rage quit so many times.

Such a frustrating read!!!

Love the gothic vibes, Lucy is amazing, I wish there would have been more of her in the book. Absolutely such a fun read.

Beautiful & moody

Got to admit the beautiful gothic cover sold me on this one. Picked it up expecting some cheesy Dracula spin-off and let’s face it - that’s exactly what this is - but the pleasant surprise was it’s actually quite good!

Unlike the Bram Stoker classic, this is unapologetically modern in style and themes. And that’s a good thing. This almost reads like a roast of the book it’s inspired by.

We see each of the characters from it reimagined through a modern, much more critical lens - and it’s a take that’s completely believable if you were to read between the lines of the original (and add a healthy dose of cynicism).

Is it the best book ever? No, but it’s a fun little page turner.

The characters are layered and likeable in the most part, while of them are completely insufferable (by design).

One criticism is the way vampires in this novel have one thing that they held close at the point of their death which becomes “the core of their being” turning them into slightly 2 dimensional wet wipes. It does however work well to highlight how absolutely infuriating it is when people ignore the facts right in front of them in favour of keeping to their own deeply ingrained beliefs.

A fun novel in it’s own right and a biting commentary on the original Dracula novel
