When a severed head is left on the steps of Newgate Prison, Lord Redmond and Inspector Haze are left with few clues to solve the murder. I love these books and the characters are so well written. I wasn’t sure about the new narrator as I thought Wendy Wolfson was perfect, but the new narrator was excellent - am off to download the next book in the series.

These stories are good but so many phrases used that are just out of place in 1869 England, they grate every time

it is lovely to follow the characters progression in these books
the crime is important but so is the personal lives of those recurring characters

I'm starting to think the author really doesn't like the character Haze. He doesn't get very much luck in life. Through the series up to now his son dies, then his wife is involved in the death of the man who caused the death of his son, causing friction between them. His wife commits suicide, then the woman he falls for later is murdered and his daughter is kidnapped. He is never given a break. he is a good thorough investigator, but is always made to look like just a plodding cop as its always part time sleuth Redmond that figures out who did the crime. While we are on Redmond, he seems to be the authors golden boy, apart from a minor health issue he could fall into a cesspit and come out smelling of roses.
I like this series, but I would like to see Haze figure out the puzzles sometimes, while Redmond is the one left in the dark.
