About this listen

When a severed head is left on the steps of Newgate Prison, Lord Redmond and Inspector Haze are left with few clues to solve the murder. Even after the victim is identified as the prison’s hangman, narrowing down the number of suspects proves difficult when the victim was responsible for dozens of deaths, leaving a long list of relatives who might have wanted revenge.

Jason and Daniel must delve into the grim world of a career hangman in order to discover who had loathed him enough to perform an execution of their own.

I love these books and the characters are so well written. I wasn’t sure about the new narrator as I thought Wendy Wolfson was perfect, but the new narrator was excellent - am off to download the next book in the series.

These stories are good but so many phrases used that are just out of place in 1869 England, they grate every time

Good narrator, shame about the anachronisms

Overall the book was good company while doing housekeeping tasks, and by now I’m used to the reader (although I still think it’s unfortunate that Audible never assigned assigned a male voice actor to read these books).

The plot is interesting, but a little predictable.
Just as Jason’s and Daniel’s reactions are becoming just what we expect.

In my opinion, the author has developed these two characters well, I'm not sure she likes Daniel much since he is definitely more unlucky than Jason, and in reality he is never the one who finds the solution to the murders.

Jason is not only very rich and titled, but always compassionate and empathic, works tirelessly both as a doctor and as an investigator, and always discovers the culprit.

I will keep listening to the following books as they are the right background entertainment on long drives or while doing house chores.

This is book n.13, so you should know what to expect
