About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

From the Sunday Times best-selling Author of The Salt Path and The Wild Silence.

The latest memoir from global bestselling author Raynor Winn.

Some people live to walk. Raynor and Moth walk to live...

Raynor Winn knows that her husband Moth's health is declining, getting worse by the day. She knows of only one cure. It worked once before. But will he—can he?—set out with her on another healing walk?

The Cape Wrath Trail is over two hundred miles of gruelling terrain through Scotland's remotest mountains and lochs. But the lure of the wilderness and the beguiling beauty of the awaiting glens draw them northwards. Being one with nature saved them in their darkest hour and their hope is that it can work its magic again.

As they set out on their incredible thousand-mile journey back to the familiar shores of the South-west Coast Path, Raynor and Moth map the landscape of an island nation facing an uncertain path ahead.

In Landlines, she records in luminous prose the strangers and friends, wilderness and wildlife they encounter on the way—it's a journey that begins in fear but can only end in hope.

While most linger, trying to get back what’s been lost, that wasn’t an option for Raynor & Moth. Immediately, they started moving forward. They have kept moving forwards, through all the uncertainties raised by Moth’s health and what would best sustain him. They did, from Scotland, walk 500 miles and 500 more, fuelled by tea, chips & an intuition that doing what the human body was designed to, in the complex natural environment it was adapted to do it in, they would be living a healthier way. Doing what made sense in any given day, they attended closely to the world around them and to the evidence of their own experiences. There seemed something intrinsically meaningful about every step walked, every observation, every consequence and challenge. An inspiring story of courage driven & sustained by an enviable love, revealing how out of touch most of us have become with our essential nature and intuitive wisdom. Not only are we reminded of the need to exist in greater harmony with our natural world but we are faced with the fact we are damaging the very environment that is our life support and that is rich with intrinsic meaning we code into our nervous system with every step. How do you sustain a healthy nervous system, when the feedback we get it is often arbitrary, inconsistent and nonsensical, if divorced from those complex, rich, meaningful chains of perception- action - and the feedback of immediate, intelligible consequence. We’re too drawn to focus on the arbitrary - to simplify experiences into a treadmill of days / miles / times ticked off. I felt humbled by the limitations of our perceived safety nets, in areas like medical care for chronic disease and uncomfortable at our willingness to hand over so much trust to those, while avoiding committing to the type of adventure Raynor and Moth have embarked upon. Though I wonder if a diet of mostly whole plant foods might have been even more powerful? If only we all held enough love to drive us forward and if only we trusted in the importance of being more in tune with the natural world, I wonder where that might take us. I admire their story and wish them many more years of the best possible health and happiness.

A love story, with some walking in it.

I enjoyed the continuation of the Wynn’s battle with a degenerative disease but the hope and joy they find in their walks. Having cared for my farmer father in his latter years of a long battle with Parkinson’s. The need for a country man to be part of the landscape and part of the seasons is a deep driving need which should not be underestimated.

“Moving” in so many ways.

I've read/listened to all Raynor's books and this one's another magical journey. An absolute must read with beautiful words, environmental empathy, hope and determination. Very inspiring!

Another wonderful book by Raynor

I have listened to all three books and this was disappointing. I wanted their story and not an unsubstantiated opinion on the woes of the planet caused (they say) by over population. Regenerative farming practices should never have been pushed aside for mass food production but I guess profit is the deciding factor rather than quality.

Disappointed
