About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Luke Skywalker and Lando Calrissian return in this essential novel set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

The Empire is dead. Nearly two decades on from the Battle of Endor, the tattered remnants of Palpatine's forces have fled to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. But for the heroes of the New Republic, danger and loss are ever-present companions, even in this newly forged era of peace.

Jedi Master Luke Skywalker is haunted by visions of the dark side, foretelling an ominous secret growing somewhere in the depths of space, on a dead world called Exegol. The disturbance in the Force is undeniable...and Luke's worst fears are confirmed when his old friend Lando Calrissian comes to him with reports of a new Sith menace.

After his daughter was stolen from his arms, Lando searched the stars for any trace of his lost child. But every new rumor only led to dead ends and fading hopes—until he crossed paths with Ochi of Bestoon, a Sith assassin tasked with kidnapping a young girl.

Ochi's true motives remain shrouded to Luke and Lando. For on a junkyard moon, a mysterious envoy of the Sith Eternal has bequeathed a sacred blade to the assassin, promising that it will give him answers to the questions that have haunted him since the Empire fell. In exchange, he must complete a final mission: return to Exegol with the key to the Sith's glorious rebirth—the granddaughter of Darth Sidious himself, Rey.

As Ochi hunts Rey and her parents to the edge of the galaxy, Luke and Lando race into the mystery of the Sith's lingering shadow and aid a young family running for their lives.

Really enjoyed this one. Stitches together the issues in the sequel movies and links neatly into episode 9. This ought to have been either episode 7/8 but understand why it was not. Very good. Some cool lightsaber fights.

Very enjoyable and some key moments

Great story complimented by good performance, brilliant music and sfx. Would listen to it again.

A great story in Starwars lore.

The story gives a lot of backstory to the rise of skywalker but I would not recommend reading it before watching the movie. Nice to follow luke for once and I like all the sith lore.

Fills in some gaps with an interesting story

I enjoyed this immensely, especially the Sith lore elements. Brilliantly narrated with musical score accompaniment and lightsaber hums, R2-D2 beeps, blaster fire, the lot.

A very good bridge between what we've seen in the Original Trilogy (OT), the Mandalorian, Ahsoka and The Force Awakens. I despise TFA and that entire trilogy (because I'm old) but this book makes me more inclined to better understand the events of the sequels.

I'd be very interested if there were further books exploring the Sith lore described in this book, it was fascinating and was the one constant that kept me turning the page (or listening, at least).

This was my first SW novel in the Disney era, having lamented about the death of the old EU (now referred to as Legends). I'm pleased to say that I am a fan of Star Wars again (thanks largely to the new TV shows but also this book.

Great narration, great story

I was very excited, when I heard there was a book coming up with Lando and Luke teaming up. Such a pairing is very rare and reminds me of the Legends Thrawn trilogy, so I had to pick Shadow of the Sith up.

The book gives a lot of room to both characters and they are very believable. There's also no weird stuff with Lando and droids, which was a concern after Solo. One stated purpose of the book is to flesh out the lore between the sequels, which it does rather well. I especially loved the inclusion of Corporate Sector Authority and Enric Pryde, but wasn't too thrilled about the main villain, Ochi. Ochi was true to his character as presented in the comics, which made him a rather unserious villain. The other villain was slightly more interesting, shame how that ended though.

It's a hard one to rate, the writing is good and the lore is solid, but I found myself not being interested in many parts of the book, not really listening. The excitement isn't really there as the outcomes are known, no real surprises to the reader. If I could, I'd give it 3,5 stars, but since I can't it'll be just 3. I can recommend the book to those who are interested in the new canon lore, but don't expect anything mindblowing

PS. Production quality is great, DeMeritt's narration is really good and his delivery works on pretty much all characters

Decent book with great lore bits
