About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before

The audiobook of Mort is narrated by the BAFTA award-winning actor Sian Clifford (Fleabag; Vanity Fair; Quiz). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

'YOU CANNOT INTERFERE WITH FATE. WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE WHO SHOULD LIVE AND WHO SHOULD DIE?'

Death comes to us all. When he came to Mort, he offered him a job.

Death is the Grim Reaper of the Discworld, a black-robed skeleton with a scythe who ushers souls into the next world. He is also fond of cats and endlessly baffled by humanity. Soon Death is yearning to experience what humanity really has to offer, but to do that, he'll need to hire some help.
It's an offer Mort can't refuse. As Death's apprentice he'll have free board, use of the company horse-and being dead isn't compulsory. It's a dream job-until Mort falls in love with Death's daughter, Ysabell, and discovers that your boss can be a killer on your love life...

The Discworld novels can be enjoyed in any order, but Mort is the first book in the Death series.

The first book in the Discworld series - The Colour of Magic - was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Critic reviews

Pratchett is a comic genius
Pratchett's humour takes logic past the point of absurdity and round again, but it is his unexpected insights into human morality that make the Discworld series stand out
Cracking dialogue, compelling illogic and unchained whimsy... Pratchett has a subject and a style that is very much his own
He is screamingly funny. He is wise. He has style

An excellent narration of my favourite Discworld novel.
I’ve really enjoyed listening to the new recordings so far, and am looking forward to the rest of the series.
Sian, Peter, and Bill all do great work, and the story is brilliant as expected.

Mort is my favourite from the Discworld Series. However, this Audible narration is quite difficult to listen to because the reader talks too quickly, sometimes almost gabbling, such that there are words said so quickly I dont know what they were, even on replay. By contrast, Bill Nighy's measured tones reading the footnotes is a joy.

One of Pratchett's best, but narrator rushes it.

I've read Mort before (conventionally) but it was great to listen to it. The readers were excellent and it was a brilliant stroke having 3 different readers, as the voice of Death should be distinctive - and it was. Having a third voice to read out Pratchett's famous footnotes too, was a stroke of genius.

If you like 'off-the-scale-whacky', this is the book for you.

Sir Terry Pratchett never disappoints

It made me laugh out loud and had me listening to parts again because I love the way Mr P describes people, things and situation.
I am now a Mr P fan and have just bought the Colour of Magic
