Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The audiobook of Carpe Jugulum is narrated by Indira Varma (Game of Thrones; Luther; This Way Up). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Steven Cree (Outlander; A Discovery of Witches) voices the Nac Mac Feegles. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

''Carpe Jugulum,' read Agnes aloud. 'That's...well, Carpe Diem is Seize the Day, so this means -'

'Go for the throat....''

Vampires have come to Lancre, but they're not what you'd expect. Sure, they drink blood and view humans as dinner, but they're modern and sophisticated. They've got style and fancy waistcoats. And they're not a bit afraid of garlic.

The Magpyr family are out of the casket and want a bite of the future. But they haven't met the neighbours yet.

Between them and Lancre stand a coven of four - Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Magrat and young Agnes - and they don't take kindly to murderous intruders....

Carpe Jugulum is the sixth book in the Witches series, but you can listen to the Discworld novels in any order.

The first book in the Discworld series – The Colour of Magic – was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Terry Pratchett once again unputdownable

Terry Pratchett does it again. His witches get involved in another escapade. Unable to put down untill finished.

Overall great, shame about the trolls

Overall I have enjoying the witches new narration, Granny, Nanny, Magrat and Agnes are all spot on. But I have one thing spoiling my overall enjoyment; it's a shame that the trolls accent really doesn't fit.
Wherever they crop up (excuse the pun), the narrator makes it sound like Trolls have a brain full of sludge not rock. There's a difference between slow and stupid and unfortunately this falls into the wrong side and can be very jarring to listen to. Igor nearly falls into the same category of being overly exaggerated but just about gets away with it. Fingers crossed that it won't be used in the same style for the Guards series.
That said the rest of the characters are well done, and I've enjoyed rediscovering the audiobooks for my Pratchett fandom (I grew up with the Tony Robinson cassettes). Would recommend listening to one before going out and spending all your credits on the whole series though.

Just perfect

The narrator just gets better in these books. Her voices are absolutely perfect in my mind. I was very nervous about this because it's one of my favourites and previous narrators have ruined it, in my opinion. I needn't have worried, she's absolutely brilliant with it and the others in the Witches arc, and I can listen to them over and over. Bill Nighy sounds bored doing the footnotes.

Varma is great, good listen, but not Pratchetts finest

Indira Varma reads these stories brilliantly, she renders the female protagonists so well and does pretty good with the males. She is subtle with her voice, without seeming to strain up or down in pitch as she switches character. This story though… it’s one of those where Pratchett (bless his memory) sometimes drops into a hole between humour and suspense/solemnity. At his best Pratchett is able to make fun of stuff like religious schisms by fictionalising them to the point where it is not a swipe at anyone personally,.. but too many of the jokes in this book (those poking fun at vampire nastiness) aren’t really funny enough and they are repetitive. I do like the ‘inner girl’ story about Agnes and Perdita, I guess this could be seen as a loving look at mental illness? Agnes is great and admirable, and as a fatty myself I find the treatment of her self image unusually sensitive and observant.

Granny and Nanny the Vampyr Slayers

Last of the Witches books and one of the best (Tiffany Aching for me is a separate strand). Indira Varma's narration. Wow. I could listen to her all day every day. If I was married to her I would deliberately annoy her so she nagged me. That's how much I love this woman's voice. The perfect Pratchett narrator.

Absolutely loved it, but slow to start but very exciting second half. I love the new narration.

I rate this as one of my favourite books

Only a twisted and quirky imagination could take so many aspects of the real - ok, I know, hope, vampires are not real - world and turn them into something amazing, which was only enhanced and underlined by the superb narration.

Don't go spilling allegory down your shirt

A wonderful new recording of one of my favourite books.
There is a great YouTube video where the actors etc discuss the venture of retelling of these legendary tales.
