About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before.

The audiobook of Carpe Jugulum is narrated by Indira Varma (Game of Thrones; Luther; This Way Up). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Steven Cree (Outlander; A Discovery of Witches) voices the Nac Mac Feegles. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

"'Carpe Jugulum,' read Agnes aloud. 'That's . . . well, Carpe Diem is Seize the Day, so this means -'
'Go for the throat . . .'"

Vampires have come to Lancre, but they're not what you'd expect. Sure, they drink blood and view humans as dinner, but they're modern and sophisticated. They've got style and fancy waistcoats. And they're not a bit afraid of garlic.

The Magpyr family are out of the casket and want a bite of the future. But they haven't met the neighbours yet.

Between them and Lancre stand a coven of four - Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Magrat and young Agnes - and they don't take kindly to murderous intruders . . .

'An enduring, endearing presence in comic literature' Guardian

'Incredibly funny . . . compulsively readable' The Times

Carpe Jugulum is the sixth book in the Witches series, but you can listen to the Discworld novels in any order.

The first book in the Discworld series - The Colour of Magic - was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Indira Varma's take on Granny Weatherwax approached my own mental picture of her from an unexpected direction, but hits perfection nevertheless.

Overall an excellent production of one of my favourite books.

A few notes: It's Perd-I-ta.
This is why P-er-ditax is funny. (Yes that's a different book but, lets get it right.)

The guy who does the Nac Mac Feegle is excellent, but needs to understand the sources of some of their exclamations. 'There can be only one thousand!' is a joke based on Highlander, and should be spoken with the same emphasis as 'There can be only one!'
Also 'Verra comp-lic-ated documents.' isn't quite right :/

I reckon the Death of Rats should also be voiced by Peter Serafinowicz.

What his name who does the annotations sounds as though he's reading them in his sleep. Wake up and try harder.

These are just silly niggles though.

Isn't it a shame subtle text based jokes are lost? There's no way to put across the bit where the Count substitutes 'prey' for 'pray'.

Indira Varma is perfect though, can't fault any of her voices, spot on 🙂

Excellent 🙂

A wonderful new recording of one of my favourite books.
There is a great YouTube video where the actors etc discuss the venture of retelling of these legendary tales.

Don't go spilling allegory down your shirt

Slow to start but once it gets going it's worth the wait. Very funny in places, I laughed a lot at Scraps, the dog with two...

Loved it.

SO wonderfully done, so brilliant. Indira Varma is such an excellent narrator and brings the story to life so well. I am particulalry fond of her Nanny Ogg.
I thoroughly recommend this to any Pratchett fans.

A truly excellent telling of a brilliant story.

Terry Pratchett does it again. His witches get involved in another escapade. Unable to put down untill finished.

Terry Pratchett once again unputdownable
