The villain Cleander has fallen, his wickedness gone from the imperial court, but his influence lives on. Amongst the Praetorians, a network of spies, killers and thieves remain, clawing on to the power they have enjoyed.

Rufinus, returned to the Guard at the hands of the devious Frumentarii, Rome’s imperial secret service, is intent on bringing the entire web of villainy to justice.

But Commodus’s reign falters and Rome is in peril. Wolves are at the door and every man with power prepares to make a bid for the purple. In a world of chaos, Rufinus is about to learn that Rome does not harbour corruption. Rome is corruption....

I like everything. The characters are complex and realistically un-self aware at times, and in this one Rufinus begins to emerge from that and reflect uneasily on his patron compared with his enemies.

It brings in the interesting Tribune, the endearing Gambionus, but prepare to mourn one of our good friends- it’s not all rosy.

The author manages to avoid the history-I do-dumping that ruins many such stories- we learn a lot but it never feels like labour, or gratuitous showing off. He trusts the reader to ‘get it’ for which I’m grateful. If you only ever read one series of historic fiction about Rome, read these!

Another gem in the best Roman series I’ve come across.

Turney can write and he takes his history seriously. Good performance by Piers Hampton.

So, why only 3 *?

Because Audible doesn’t give a 3.5 * option and the characters lack a certain ingredient that I need in order to believe they are human.

Otherwise, A very engrossing work.

Good Historical Fiction.

I found the story line a little humdrum. The main character was beginning to get predictable, as were his escape routes.

I've listened to all four audiobooks before this but technical glitched where chapter were repeated twice was irritating.

Repetitive
