Los Angeles Detective Harry Bosch tackles a cold case unlike any he's ever worked, in the new legal thriller from the bestselling author of THE LINCOLN LAWYER and THE BLACK ECHO, Michael Connelly.

In the LA Police's Open-Unsolved Unit, not many murder victims die almost a decade after the crime. So when a man succumbs to complications from being shot by a stray bullet ten years earlier, Bosch catches a case in which the body is still fresh, but any other evidence is virtually non-existent.

Now Bosch and his new partner, rookie Detective Lucia Soto, are tasked with solving what turns out to be a highly charged, politically sensitive case. Starting with the bullet that's been lodged for years in the victim's spine, they must pull new leads from years-old information, which soon reveals that this shooting may have been anything but random in this gripping police procedural.©2014 Hieronymous, Inc

Critic reviews

As ever in Michael Connelly's work, Los Angeles - a city in which 'no matter how close it something looked, it was still far away' - is a character in its own right. And the jazz soundtrack - 'plaintive and sad but ... with an undeniable underlying hope' - makes The Burning Room a superb swansong.
It's a good story, but crucially The Burning Room shows Bosch on top form, his age no impediment to his stubbornness nor his professional insights (Marcel Berlins)
what Connelly delivers here - as ever - is a slice of classy, clever, page-turning stuff, as Bosch and his excellent new sidekick trace the shadows of years-old crimes whose tendrils stretch through the echelons of LA society and across the sprawl of its geography. The detective is described by his boss - 'the one that knows the most in the troop. Has all the experience.' Connelly, too, is a pair of eminently safe hands, and The Burning Room is a pleasure to read. (Alison Flood)
Connelly weaves his story as deftly as always, never slackening the tension
Connelly has lost none of his fire, nor his desire to take his readers by the throat and never let them go
a master of narrative tension, complex but believable plotting and three-dimensional characters ... his latest novel maintains the same high standard and relentless impetus that keeps one turning the pages.
a taut and believable tale set in a grimly recognisable world where those at the top - be they career politicians or career criminals - share a disregard for the lives of those they exploit.
A master at construction, Connelly finds a way to link the two cases, which burrow deep into Los Angeles's Latino community. As often happens in Connelly's police procedurals, Bosch's meticulously built case is undermined by political corruption in high places, leaving him 'suddenly sick to death of everything'.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No , Titus Welliver delivered it in a monotone boring voice - it would put you to sleep

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I returned the book before the end , Ill buy the paper version and finish it rather than listen to Titus

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Titus Welliver?

Anyone

A let down

What made the experience of listening to The Burning Room the most enjoyable?

As the years have gone by, Harry's mellowed a tiny amount. The story lines are just as good, but not so forceful or violent, in keeping with the age thing. Whilst I enjoyed Titus Welliver, who will make a fine on screen Harry, he doesn't 'do' other character voice changes, which makes some of the dialogue difficult to follow.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Different character voices rather than the same for all.

Harry's getting old!

I am a Bosch junky and this had best not be the end. Loved it, as always

Would you listen to The Burning Room again? Why?

A good story written at a good pace. Good old fashioned Bosch back where he belongs catching up with the bad guys. This is a much gentler book than some of the vintage Bosch, but back to the old fashioned detective work that Harry is so good at.
I enjoyed the personal side of the story, the characters were engaging and had an integrity to them.
Excellent book to curl up to on a wet and windy Sunday afternoon, Made my weekend.

What other book might you compare The Burning Room to, and why?

Much as I enjoy Michael Connelly's other protagonists, Bosch has always been my favourite. Dirty Harry is getting on a bit but he still has what it takes.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Pretty much. Over a weekend.

Any additional comments?

Michael Connelly rarely lets you down.

Bosch is back

I can see why this book has had mixed reviews. We heat a melancholy Bosch and that added to the voice of Titus Welliver (the fantastic actor who plays the perfect Bosch in the series) its a little dry in areas.
Still a well constructed story and book. Stick with it.

Another Good Book
