Summary

‘Stories are like Russian dolls; open them up, and in each one you’ll find another story.’

Conjured from a wickedly imaginative pen, here is a new collection of short stories that showcases Joanne Harris’s exceptional storytelling art. Sensuous, wicked, mischievous, uproarious and wry, here are tales that combine the everyday with the unexpected; wild fantasy with bittersweet reality. From the house where it is Christmas all year round, to a ghost who lives on a Twitter timeline; from the Congo where a young girl braves the raging rapids to earn a crust of bread, to Norse gods battling for survival in Manhattan; and a new-born baby created with sugar, spice, and lashings of cake, these stories will ensnare and delight you with their variety and inventiveness.

A Cat, A Hat, and a Piece of String

Joanne Harris' short story writing never fails to disappoint. This collection is full of thought-provoking, engaging, reflective, heart-breaking and amusing stories that introduce new characters and bring back some of (my) favourites from Harris' previous writing. An excellent collection.

Full of fight & fun with touch of magic as always

Joanne Harris never fails to please and enchant. I love her approach to life which always seem to say every cloud has a silver lining and where there's a will there's a way even in dire circumstances. Her use of language and story construction never bores me and I'm always left feeling bereft and wanting more at the end. I look forward to her next book.

A glorious mix of imagination

Joanne Harris never disappoints. I don't usually read/listen to short stories but was intrigued by the title!!
I loved it all, no favourites. Treat yourself to a sweet shop full of descriptive tales...

A treasure chest of a variety of gems of the highest quality. A riveting collection of tales from a master storyteller!!

She is the most mesmerising storyteller- and so extraordinarily versatile in her subjects… the last tale was particularly perceptive and humorous yet so moving if you’re looking for quality and variety you can’t go wrong!

A great collection of short stories

I will admit that I had to skip 1 of the stories as I found it not to my taste. I loved the shenanigans of Hope & Faith. I especially liked the ghost story about the tumble down house, I could go on. In short a wonderful listen.
