THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK IS 'A MONUMENT TO THE HUMAN SPIRIT'

One of the most famous accounts of living under the Nazi regime comes from the diary of a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl, Anne Frank. Edited by her father Otto H. Frank and German novelist Mirjam Pressler, this is a true story to be rediscovered by each new generation.

12th July 1944:
'It's difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.'

In the summer of 1942, fleeing the horrors of the Nazi occupation, Anne Frank and her family were forced into hiding in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse.

Aged thirteen, Anne kept a diary of her time in the secret annexe. She movingly revealed how the eight people living under these extraordinary conditions coped with hunger, the daily threat of discovery and death and isolation from the outside world.

A thought-provoking record of tension and struggle, adolescence and confinement, anger and heartbreak, the diary of Anne Frank is a testament to the atrocities of the past and a promise they will never be forgotten.

This story provides just a glimpse of how the persecution and trialling life of Jews during the 1940s. It is extremely sad, but also courageous as it shows how even in the darkest times, people can stand up for each other and find comfort in one another. You can also see how Anne's mind matured during her time at the annex, and it's very saddening at the end of the book. She was a talented girl indeed, at least she got to make her mark.

The performer has an excellent voice, crisp and captivating, but I didn't feel it conveyed the right emotions for some of these letters.

Exceptionally moving story

I love the diary of Ann Frank almost as if I had written the words myself but the voice acting is a little flat at times

Love this book

On the contrary to many commenting that they would have liked a child read the story, in my opinion Helena's excellent performance served justice to Ann M. Frank.

Ann, so bright.

Would you consider the audio edition of Diary of a Young Girl to be better than the print version?

Haven't read the print version, this is my first "read"

What did you like best about this story?

The direct link to Ann's day to day thoughts, feelings. One can really feel her grow up and attempt to understand how they lived in such a small space and under so much presure.

What about Helena Bonham Carter’s performance did you like?

Wonderful. However there are several minutes in the book in which it sounds as if they used a rehersal read, the audio is not on par with the rest.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Ann mentioning that she wished to be cremated when she passes away, She meant in the distant future, but the line just runs a chill down your spine.

Any additional comments?

The fact that the end is known throughout the book and then it just happens, is powerful.

Exceptionally powerful
