About this listen

The evil Master leered at the Doctor, and triumphantly pointed out of the cabin window. The many-tentacled Nestene monster – spearhead of the second Auton invasion of Earth – crouched beside the radio tower! Part crab, part spider, part octopus, its single huge eye blazed with alien intelligence and deadly hatred... Can the Doctor outwit his rival Time Lord, the Master, and save the Earth from the Nestene horror? Geoffrey Beevers, who played an incarnation of the Master in the classic BBC TV series Doctor Who, reads Terrance Dicks’ complete and unabridged novelisation, first published by Target Books in 1975. ‘BBC Audiobooks has chosen well with its books and has taken the right approach with its readers... they benefit from new music and sound effects’ - Doctor Who Magazine. Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This is a classic story, one of the two original Auton adventures, and with The Master to boot. The novel version expands slightly the antics seen on-screen in the TV series.

What was most disappointing about Terrance Dicks’s story?

The language is rather childish and reveals somewhat an overtone of prejudice, e.g. describing people as being scary or unsettling for being "foreign looking" or "slanty eyed".

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Geoffrey Beevers?

Geoffrey Beevers is an excellent narrator. However he misses out the chapter markers which is hugely frustrating. Audible also has cocked up the embedded chapter flags meaning that some "chapters" are over an hour and a half long, making it very difficult to keep track of where one is when listening in short sessions.

Was Doctor Who and the Terror of the Autons worth the listening time?

It's worth it listening to if you are listening to all of the Doctor Who's. This story is not available as an audio soundtrack.

Any additional comments?

See the above comments about chapter markers being all wrong. I've asked for a refund, as I wouldn't accept this of a printed book.
