About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

An Infamous Army is read by Kristin Atherton, who appears in Waterloo Road.

The Battle of Waterloo. A heart-racing tale of adventure, love and fate against the backdrop of one of the most decisive battles in history by one of the greatest and best-selling romantic novelists of all time.

In 1815, beneath the aegis of the Army of Occupation, Brussels is the gayest town in Europe. And the widow Lady Barbara Childe, renowned for being as outrageous as she is beautiful, is at the centre of all that is fashionable and light-hearted. When she meets Charles Audley, dashing aide-de-camp to the great Duke of Wellington himself, her joie de vivre knows no bounds - until the eve of the fateful Battle of Waterloo....

Georgette Heyer was the creator - greatest practitioner - of the Regency romance, and An Infamous Army shows why she has won the hearts of a whole new audience with her sweeping historical fiction.

I am a huge Heyer fan and read all her regency romances to shreds. I have avoided reading this one however, not being a fan of Spanish Bride. I am so glad I have finally done so. Whilst most of her novels are chocolate boxes for sick days, this most thought provoking and meaningful of all her novels truly demonstrates that she has soul. As always rich in accurate historical detail, alongside beautifully drawn characters, this novel demonstrates the horror of war, but does not neglect to provide an uplifting story line and romance.

Heyer’s most meaningful novel

Brilliantly written by Georgette Heyer, but you'll need a strong stomach for the chapters on the terrible Battle of Waterloo!

Brilliant vintage Georgette Heyer

Amazing level of information on the period up to and immediately after the battle of Waterloo. This is held together by a volatile romance. That story served to introduce characters and allow you to get to know them as the battle draws closer. But there are so many characters in this book that it’s difficult to keep track of them

I found myself reading up on Quatre Bras and Waterloo. On the whole it was very interesting and not your usual romance novel!

Detailed story of Waterloo with a bit of romance

Having read many Georgette Heyer novels, I love the way she uses the realistic depiction of the battle of Waterloo and the actual participants to bind the Audley and Alastair families together. A triumph in historical fiction.

Superb story

Excellent book, showcasing Heyer's excellence as a historian as well as a romantic novelist.

Atherton read it incredibly well. The characterisations are wonderful, and she does brilliantly with all the accents and names and the slang and speech of the times. Really well done.

Big book for GH and a lot going on.
